TL;DR: The authors examined how nuclear risk was perceived by German and Japanese journalists covering the Fukushima disaster and found that German correspondents were highly concerned about their personal safety while Japanese journalists hardly showed any anxiety with regard to the nuclear disaster.
Abstract: The article examines how nuclear risk was perceived by German and Japanese journalists covering the Fukushima Disaster. Drawing from the theoretical framework of Beck’s World Risk Society, the journalists’ personal risk perceptions are reconstructed from narrative interviews, adding an important variable to the understanding of journalistic communication on risk and disaster. The results indicate that German correspondents in Japan were highly concerned about their personal safety while Japanese journalists hardly showed any anxiety with regard to the nuclear disaster. The varying perceptions also widely applied to the journalists’ professional experience of the disaster, although further influences like organizational culture came into play as well. The article concludes that historically shaped discourses are an important macro factor for media reporting on risk and disaster.

TL;DR: In the context of the 1987 elections, Islam was instrumentalized in the struggle over political legitimacy in the governmental journal al-Liwa' al-Islami and its regime-critical counterpart Liwa’ al Islam, the latter was launched ten days after the first session of Parliament was held.
Abstract: The 1987 parliamentary elections in Egypt, held at a time of Islamization and relative political liberalization, resulted in a significant number of seats for the Muslim Brotherhood. Consequently, the political cards were shuffled and the regime and the Brotherhood became involved in a struggle over legitimacy, in which Islam played a central part. Through qualitative content analysis, this paper studies how, in the context of the 1987 elections, Islam was instrumentalized in the struggle over political legitimacy in the governmental journal al-Liwa’ al-Islami and its regimecritical counterpart Liwa’ al-Islam, the latter of which was launched ten days after the first session of Parliament was held. Although the two journals performed different roles, there were many similarities in how both viewed political Islam. I argue that these shared Islamic values functioned as an instrument to connect people and added to the legitimacy of both the regime and the Brotherhood.

TL;DR: In this paper, a study of suggested approaches to social media regulation based on an exploratory methodological approach is presented, providing an overview of the global and local debates and the main arguments and concerns, and systematising this in order to construct taxonomies.
Abstract: This is a study of suggested approaches to social media regulation based on an exploratory methodological approach. Its first aim is to provide an overview of the global and local debates and the main arguments and concerns, and second, to systematise this in order to construct taxonomies. Despite its methodological limitations, the study provides new insights into this very relevant global and local policy debate. We found that there are trends in regulatory policymaking towards both innovative and radical approaches but also towards approaches of copying broadcast media regulation to the sphere of social media. In contrast, traditional selfand co-regulatory approaches seem to have been, by and large, abandoned as the preferred regulatory approaches. The study discusses these regulatory approaches as presented in global and selected local, mostly European and US discourses in three analytical groups based on the intensity of suggested regulatory

TL;DR: The lateinamerikanische Medien-and Kommunikationswissenschaft (LMKW) erlebt seit etwa drei Jahrzehnten eine Stagnation im empirischen and theoretischen Bereich.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors focused on how teenagers identify fake news on social networks and their news practices and experiences on social media and found that teenagers are unable to spot fake news as they are less likely to check the source of information that raised a major concern about their ability to deal with fake news.
Abstract: The emergence of next generation users has reshaped the use and impact of internet in our society. Now users can access internet from multiple devices (Smartphone, PC/Laptops, Tab/Pad etc.) and multiple locations. This phenomenon among teenagers has increased as they engage with media devices at both home and schools. Pew Internet and American Life Project reported in 2015 that 71% teenagers use multiple social media sites and 92% are daily internet users. Teenagers can create social media account at the age of 13 to socialize, and to access information and news. Thus, social media plays an effective role in online news consumption that has reshaped the usage and production of news media. One of the major challenges for social networks appeared after 2016 US presidential elections was “Fake News”, and it associates with elections, terrorism and natural disasters. Apprehensions about the factual and potential social impact of fake news lead to this study about news practices and experiences in Pakistani teenagers. This study focuses on how teenagers identify fake news on social networks and their news practices and experiences on social media. Teenagers are unable to spot fake news as they are less likely to check the source of information that raised a major concern about their ability to deal with fake news. This study confirms that teenagers are less likely to check source of news, as they are also not capable of identifying fake news. Teenagers consider internet and social media as their major source of information. These findings highlight the importance and significance of digital media literacy education at school level to combat new media challenges. Results further demonstrate that social media and news consumption has been neglected in media literacy education in Pakistan. This study provides policy implications to government for the introduction of digital media literacy at schools and college level.

TL;DR: The authors assesses the dominant debates about the agency in media narratives for community-based peacebuilding and finds that conflict is a function of discourse and that media narratives take active part in the construction, negotiation and circulation of discourse, all of which inform the degree of congruity between news content and expected outcomes.
Abstract: This article assesses the dominant debates about the agency in media narratives for community-based peacebuilding. By locating the common challenges facing the agency in media narratives for the purposes of community-based peacebuilding, the article contributes to the ongoing debates on ways in which media discourses can be tailored toward the prevention, management, and resolution of conflicts between, within and among communities. This is predicated on the assumption that conflict is a function of discourse, and that media narratives take active part in the construction, negotiation, and circulation of discourse, all of which inform the degree of congruity between news content and expected outcomes. The primary objective of this article is therefore to generate conceptual and theoretical debates on the agentic and formative roles media narratives play in community-based peacebuilding.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated how threat narratives and enemy images were constructed at the pan-Arab news TV station, al-Mayadeen, during the station's first year on air, and argued that the construction of an enemy image takes places as a fine interplay between threat narratives of existing political and ideological positions on the one hand, and current affairs on the other.
Abstract: This article investigates how threat narratives and enemy images were constructed at the pan-Arab news TV station, al-Mayadeen, during the station’s first year on air. I argue that the construction of an enemy image takes places as a fine interplay between threat narratives of existing political and ideological positions on the one hand, and current affairs on the other. Al-Mayadeen started broadcasting in 2012, counteracting both the new influential narratives of young activists calling for democracy, and the Sunni Islamist trend that followed; both groups became central elements in a process of ‘Othering’ at al-Mayadeen, dividing the Arab world into ‘good’ and ‘bad’. AlMayadeen relaunched the question of Palestine, while the well-known threat narrative of Israel was equally promoted although adjusted to ongoing political and military developments in the region. Integrating the rising new actor, the Islamic State, a renewed enemy image was constructed where Israel and the Islamic State came to constitute two faces of the same enemy.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined how three mainstream political parties of Pakistan, utilized the Facebook and Twitter for their electioneering in 2018 and found that the element of hate speech was existing in their Tweets and Facebook posts.
Abstract: The usage and influence of the social media in the 2018 general elections in Pakistan was pervasive compared to the one held in 2013. This study examines that how three mainstream political parties of Pakistan, utilized the Facebook and Twitter for their electioneering in 2018. To what extent the element of hate speech was existing in their Tweets and Facebook posts? The research adopted qualitative method and employed content analysis of the Facebook posts and Tweets of seventeen (17) selected central leaders and parties’ media cells from period of May 25 to July 25, 2018. To examine the level of Media and Information Literacy (MIL) and hate speech in political campaign, elite interviews were also conducted. The findings suggest that political leaders promoted hate speech through Facebook and Twitter for electoral purposes. In this respect, Twitter emerged as a major tool for spewing hate. The study recommends the formation of special code of conduct for political campaign on the social media by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for reducing hate speech and to build a peaceful democratic society.

TL;DR: In this article, 45 Twitter-Accounts of rechtspopulistischen Parteifunktionären of neun europäischen parteien analysiert.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the expectations and perceptions of students towards TVET institutions at the Buffalo City Metro and found that a majority of students would prefer a university rather than a TVET college as a higher education route.
Abstract: Perception plays a vital role in anything one should be interested to acquire. This research study aims at investigating the expectations and perceptions of students towards Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions at the Buffalo City Metro. The objectives of this study included assessing whether student’s choice when deciding to enroll at higher education institutions is influenced by their perceptions. Additionally, the study strives to investigate the marketing communication practices employed by the TVET Colleges that influence student decision thus contributing towards improving students’ perception towards TVET Colleges. For TVET Colleges, marketing communication plays a vital role in students’ recruitment. The findings of this study reveal that a majority of students would prefer a university rather than a TVET College as a higher education route. It was also noted that although that is the issue, majority students would go to TVETs as an alternative. Marketing communications of TVET Colleges need to be improved in order for students to change their perceptions and select TVETs well-informed.

TL;DR: This article found that celos romanticos are associated with the miedo, the rabia, the falta de confianza, the inseguridad, tristeza, and the desilusion.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigate the association between social media exposure and mental health issues of students such as anxiety and depression amid the COVID-19 pandemic and find that mental health problems like depression and anxiety were not related to social media.
Abstract: The motive behind this survey was to investigate the association between social media exposure (SME) and mental health issues of students such as anxiety and depression amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Data was collected from 567 Pakistani students aged 16-30 through an online survey. Contradictory to some of the recent similar studies, evidence from the analysis indicates that mental health issues like depression and anxiety were not related to SME amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The prevalence rates of anxiety and depression were found to be 46.4% and 61% respectively. The high percentage of depression and anxiety found in surveyed students indicated that the government needs to pay special attention to mental health problems like depression and anxiety amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors focus on two related aspects of media involvement in the Kashmir conflict: 1) the international battleground of media coverage of the conflict (with India on one side pursuing a narrative of legitimacy through media control, and the international media on the other leaning too heavily into the narrative of a violent oppressor), and 2) what is, consequently, ignored from the coverage and, thus, missing for a fair understanding of what the situation is on the ground.
Abstract: If one believes in the power and relative importance of journalism in our modern world, then one would be inclined to believe mainstream media’s coverage of a particular issue to be fair and accurate Being fair, however, is not just about getting your facts straight It is also about what you leave out, about the informal narrative that is painted in the coverage of an issue This distinction is especially relevant when covering conflict outside of your own borders, especially longstanding conflicts with entrenched opposite narratives, a severe dent on emotional engagement, and virtually the highest stakes possible, as is the India-Pakistan conflict over the disputed territories of Jammu and Kashmir What can end up happening in decades-long reporting of such conflicts is that the very coverage itself becomes, inadvertently, a battleground This paper will, thus, focus on two related aspects of media involvement in the Kashmir conflict: 1) The international battleground of media coverage of the conflict (with India on one side pursuing a narrative of legitimacy through media control, and the international media on the other leaning too heavily into a narrative of a violent oppressor –India), and 2) what is, consequently, ignored from the coverage and, thus, missing for a fair understanding of what the situation is on the ground

TL;DR: The findings showed that the nurses’ observations of older patients with COPD when providing home nursing care were characterized by their search for deviations from what they judged to be the patient’s habitual state.
Abstract: Nurses working in home care play a significant role in observing and identifying changes in the health status of patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The aim of this study was to explore and describe nurses' observations of older patients with COPD when providing home nursing care. In this qualitative explorative study, data were collected through observations of 17 home care visits using the think-aloud technique, followed up with individual interviews with the nurses. Qualitative content analysis was used to analyze the data. The findings showed that the nurses' observations (focus, methods, and interpretation) were characterized by their search for deviations from what they judged to be the patient's habitual state. The nurses did not use any tool or guidelines, nor did they follow a standard procedure. Instead, when observing and interpreting, they performed a complex process guided by their experience and knowledge of the patient, and the patient's individual and contextual circumstances. This knowledge contributes to warranted reflection on nurses' practice in this context to secure COPD patients' safety and quality of life.

TL;DR: Through a qualitative study of highly engaged Facebook and Instagram users, this paper defines a new concept of SNS penetration, and claims that it happens forcefully and in an unconscious way.
Abstract: It is known that Facebook and Instagram users can set their privacy settings to determine their levels of disclosure. That means that the users are the ones who decide the penetration level for themselves on those social networking sites (SNS). This study seeks to test whether those SNS can penetrate their users unconsciously and with their agreement at the same time or not. Through a qualitative study of highly engaged Facebook and Instagram users, this paper defines a new concept of SNS penetration, and claim that it happens forcefully and in an unconscious way. Focus groups will be conducted to answer the major research questions and a thematic analysis will be conducted on the focus groups to determine the topics discussed by the participants. The data will be analyzed within the frameworks of Social Penetration theory and Communication Privacy Management (CPM) theory. Four main challenges will be tested as the study samples which are 10 Year Challenge, Kiki Challenge, The Ice Bucket Challenge and the Face App Age.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors analyzed the income elasticity of demand based on data from the Higher Education Census and the Average Income of the Brazilian population in the period from 1984 to 2018, demonstrating how family income substantially influences the number of students enrolled in private higher education in the country.
Abstract: Brazilian higher education registered a remarkable growth from the 90's, explained by the changes that occurred in the Law of Directives and Bases of Education (Lei de Diretrizes e Bases da Educacao- LDB) of 1996. These changes enabled the expansion of the private sector, by more than 500%, from the 80's until the year 2018. This article analyzed the income elasticity of demand based on data from the Higher Education Census and the Average Income of the Brazilian population in the period from 1984 to 2018. The aim is to demonstrate how family income substantially influences the number of students enrolled in private higher education in the country. The calculation showed an elasticity of approximately 2.96, that is, for each unit increased in the income of the Brazilian population, the demand for higher education will be increased by approximately 2.96 units. The results obtained, based on the growth of the country's income, help in the projection of future enrollments, in the revenue forecast and in the preparation of the sector's business planning.

TL;DR: This article present a mapa de medios publicos actualizado to date, up to diciembre de 2019, with the goal of transparentar esta información.

Abstract: This research focuses on a Twitter protest about the Ayotzinapa case (the disappearance of 43 students in Mexico in 2014) that for years has existed under the hashtag #PaseDeLista1al43. The main purpose is to assess if this protest can be understood as a counterpublic. Through thematic analyses of tweets and 15 semi-structured interviews, the study found the following: Protesters deconstruct power relations within the case and challenge the government’s version about the students; seek to disrupt mainstream narratives with their messages; and developed a collective identity that helped maintain the protest alive for years. These findings point to the possibility of Twitter to house a long-lasting public that challenges dominant political narratives. A public that came together with a hashtag can go beyond short connective actions on Twitter and develop a community to discuss and solidify opinions, and then get attention from other publics.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors show that SMMEs do not use social media marketing to its full potential and face challenges when it comes to the use of Social media marketing, while traditional marketing which involves television, radio and billboards comes at a cost way high for these SME's and therefore growth of these companies becomes a challenge due to low sales as a result of awareness of goods and services provided.
Abstract: Introduction: Social media marketing is an online communication that businesses use to interact with customers in an exchange of goods and services. Marketing has been a challenge for small and medium enterprises (SMMEs) around the world due to its cost. According to Kaplan and Haenlien social media has generated massive content due to users sharing their opinions and experiences on several topics. Digital marketing has provided small and medium enterprises a platform to create awareness to consumers on what they offer at relatively low costs. Traditional marketing which involves television, radio and billboards comes at a cost way high for these SME’s and therefore growth of these companies becomes a challenge due to low sales as a result of awareness of goods and services provided. Research aims: Determine the usage patterns of social media amongst small and medium enterprises in East London. Design/methodology/approach: Convenience sampling was adopted and a questionnaire was utilized to gather data using closed-ended questions. Research findings: The results show that SMMEs do not use social media marketing to its full potential and that SMMEs face challenges when it comes to the use of social media marketing.

TL;DR: In this article, a recent article by social anthropologist, Francis Nyamnjoh, “ICTs as Juju: African Inspiration for Understanding the compositeness of Being Human” echoes a similar philosophical stance.
Abstract: Information Communication Technology (ICT) tools and services are designed from Western contexts, with an implied assumption that people in the West and the South will respond to the same technologies in similar ways. As a result, African realities are rarely considered in the design and deployment of digital technologies [1]. However, African societies appropriate digital communication technologies into African cultural repertoire and assign meanings that are significant in the Africa context [2]. This exemplifies the ongoing importance of domestication theory and its influence as a tool for understanding the socio-cultural and symbolic power of communication technologies [3], as re-enacting older rituals [4] akin to totem and fetish worship or beliefs and the circulation of myths and ideologies. In other words, digital technologies are connected to already existing local traditions and are shaped and transformed by them. A recent article by social anthropologist, Francis Nyamnjoh, “ICTs as Juju: African Inspiration for Understanding the compositeness of Being Human” [5], echoes a similar philosophical stance.
