TL;DR: In this paper, the authors show that adjustable speed generators for wind turbines are necessary when output power becomes higher than 1.5 MW, e.g., for off-shore applications.
Abstract: This article shows that adjustable speed generators for wind turbines are necessary when output power becomes higher than 1 MW. The doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) system presented in this article offers many advantages to reduce cost and has the potential to be built economically at power levels above 1.5 MW, e.g., for off-shore applications. A dynamic model of the DFIG was derived to develop a vector controller to decouple dynamically active and reactive power control. Simulations show excellent response of the DFIG independent of speed. Measurements obtained from 1.5 MW units currently in operation confirm the theoretical results.

TL;DR: In this paper, the industrial application of motor current signature analysis (MCSA) to diagnose faults in three-phase induction motor drives is discussed, which is a noninvasive, online monitoring technique for the diagnosis of problems in induction motors.
Abstract: Three-phase induction motors are the "workhorses" of industry and are the most widely used electrical machines. In an industrialized nation, they can typically consume between 40 to 50% of all the generated capacity of that country. This article focuses on the industrial application of motor current signature analysis (MCSA) to diagnose faults in three-phase induction motor drives. MCSA is a noninvasive, online monitoring technique for the diagnosis of problems in induction motors. Reliability-based maintenance (RBM) and condition-based maintenance (CBM) strategies are now widely used by industry, and health monitoring of electrical drives is a major feature in such programs.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors have characterized common nonlinear loads have been characterized into two types of harmonic sources, current-source type of harmonic source and voltage source type of source, and discussed the compensation characteristics of both parallel active filters and series active filters.
Abstract: In this article, common nonlinear loads have been characterized into two types of harmonic sources, current-source type of harmonic source and voltage-source type of harmonic source. Compensation characteristics of both parallel active filters and series active filters have been discussed analytically and experimentally for these two types of harmonic sources. The corresponding required operation conditions, features, application issues, and adaptive harmonic sources of both filters have been presented. The fact that the traditional active filter, the parallel active filter, is not a panacea to harmonic compensation, and that one cannot use it blindly, has been clearly addressed. The parallel active filter will increase harmonic current and may cause overcurrent of the load when the load is a harmonic voltage source. Instead, it has been verified that the series active filter is better suited for compensation of a harmonic voltage source such as a diode rectifier with smoothing DC capacitor. The conclusions of this article also imply that when a parallel active filter is installed in a power system network such as at a point of common coupling, the network impedance and main harmonic sources downstream from the installation point should be investigated in order to get good performance and to minimize influence to the loads downstream. In some cases, a combined system of parallel active filter and series active filter may be necessary by utilizing the harmonic isolation function of the series active filters. No doubt active filters are superior to passive filters if used in their niche applications.

TL;DR: In this article, the emphasis is on distributed generators that are interconnected to with utility distribution systems, which are referred to as distributed generation (DG) and are typically no larger than 1 or 2 MW.
Abstract: The emphasis of this article is on distributed generators that are interconnected to with utility distribution systems. These will generally be units smaller than 10 MW. Larger units are generally connected directly to transmission facilities and will most likely be commercial power producers. The units installed on distribution systems will typically be no larger than 1 or 2 MW. These would be installed mostly by the utility itself or by end users. This method of generation is commonly referred to as "distributed generation" (DG).

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present very expensive impulse testing (also called surge testing) and turn insulation deterioration in electric motors, including multiple start and stops under normal line conditions, and the insulation failure mechanisms, fundamentals of impulse testing and results of various tests are presented.
Abstract: This paper presents very expensive impulse testing (also called surge testing) and turn insulation deterioration in electric motors. The tests include multiple start and stops under normal line conditions. The stresses introduced into the winding during startup and stopping process were two-fold. These stresses were the cause of the shorted turn-turn. The insulation failure mechanisms, fundamentals of impulse testing and results of various tests are presented.
