Abstract: Based on empirical studies, the article discusses the issues of developing indigenous social work for women in China, especially in response to the changing needs resulting from economic reform and women's self-concepts. The western feminist model is deconstructed as a form of domination over women in developing countries. Some practice principles are highlighted, in the context of rising concerns over family violence.

Abstract: The article outlines the process whereby a graduate school of social work made its program comprehensively international, using Healy's criteria. The four goals were: raising awareness and making connections; student recruitment, support and advising; curriculum development; and international eld placements. The work of the Local Inter-National Konnections Committee is described, in particular the development of the Emphasis in International Social Work course.

Abstract: Twenty-five US schools provided international field experience either in agencies dealing with international problems or in foreign countries. There appear to be two primary patterns for making overseas placements. One is through the initiative of a faculty member and the other is through the learning centers in different countries. Students chose field experiences in foreign countries because they were enthusiastic about it. Also, some of them had family, friends or relatives in those countries. The largest deterrent to overseas placements is financial difficulty.

Abstract: Most of the street-based children are not educated beyond primary school and their living conditions are based on begging and doing odd jobs in the market and streets. Forty-six percent of the on-the-street children live with one parent, and 97 percent of the of-the-street children have lost contact with their parents. The on-the-street children have a higher percentage of family sector networks than the of-the-street children and the shelter or institutionalized children. Generally, school children still have strong family ties.

Abstract: This article examines the successes and shortcomings of international intervention in child welfare in Romania, highlighting the importance of an empowerment approach. Implementing such an approach brings its own challenges, and the authors debate the possibilities and potential pitfalls. They identify key principles and essential personal qualities for putting empowerment into practice in situations of economic, political and social difficulty.

Abstract: This study identifies patterns of utilization of social support among Israeli Arab students.The sample consisted of 64 Arab students. Findings show that Arab students distinguish between emotional and instrumental support and allocate sources of support accordingly. Emotional support is sought within the social network and instrumental support is sought within the family.

Abstract: In response to the vagueness of dignity and its limited application in social welfare, this article attempts to explore the content of dignity and discuss its implications for welfare policies. Dignity concerns living respectfully, for which having equal value, self-respect, autonomy and positive mutuality is essential. The article argues that institutional dignification, community respect and human development are three welfare directions for facilitating the possession of dignity.

Abstract: This article examines the methods used by managerial women in Guangzhou and Hong Kong to cope with social exclusion. In the first section we define social exclusion discuss methods for reducing social exclusion through securing attachment to the main social institutions and examine how these methods relate to different ideologies. The second part discusses how social exclusion is related to the double expectations facing women both in the work place and in the family as the main care provider. The final section examines the findings of our studies of managerial women in Guangzhou and Hong Kong completed in 1997 and 1999 respectively. The studies focus on their attempts to reduce social exclusion by attaching to their work units and family. (excerpt)
