TL;DR: In this paper, the authors employed stratified random sampling to collect data from 198 businesses using interviews and questionnaires and concluded that business success is a consequence of embracing a mix of strategies.
Abstract: Small and Micro Enterprises (SMEs) play an important economic role in many countries. In Kenya, for example the SME sector contributed over 50percent of new jobs created in 2005 but despite their significance, SMEs are faced with the threat of failure with past statistics indicating that three out five fail within the first few months. This study sought to understand how SMEs manage the challenges they face. These challenges seem to change (evolve) according to different macro and micro conditions. This study employed stratified random sampling to collect data from 198 businesses using interviews and questionnaires. The data was analysed descriptively and presented through figures, tables and percentages. The findings indicate that SMEs face the following challenges; competition among themselves and from large firms, lack of access to credit, cheap imports, insecurity and debt collection. Credit constraint seems to be easing up when compared to previous researches. Relevant training or education is positively related to business success. The SMEs have the following strategies to overcome the challenges; fair pricing, discounts and special offers, offering a variety of services and products, superior customer service and continuously improving quality of service delivery. The research concludes that business success is a consequence of embracing a mix of strategies.

TL;DR: In this paper, an exploratory study that aims to identify the key drivers of employee engagement within the Egyptian context is presented. And the impact of engagement on job performance and organisational commitment based on social exchange theory (SET).
Abstract: During the past two decades, employee engagement became a very popular managerial construct. Organisations use different engagement building tools in order to stay competitive and improve performance. Though there is an increasing contribution in human resource consulting agencies on the concept of employee engagement, yet there is a shortage of academic studies on that construct, especially in emerging economies countries. This engagement gap grew more in importance amidst the waves of ongoing recession and resource scarcity battles prevailing in the Middle Eastern Region, in general, and in Egypt in particular. This is an exploratory study that aims to identify the key drivers of employee engagement within the Egyptian context. It also studies the impact of employee engagement on job performance and organisational commitment based on social exchange theory (SET). A survey questionnaire was developed and validated. Regression analysis was used to predict and explain the proposed relationships. The study was conducted on 245 bank employees from several private and public banks operating in Cairo-Egypt with a response rate of about 81.6 % ( 200 employees) Pearson correlation matrix and regression were used to predict and estimate the relationships. Regression results indicated that leadership and organisational justice were the most significant drivers of employee engagement.. The mediation effect was confirmed. Employee engagement had significant impact on job performance, but less impact on organisational commitment. This study adds to the very few academic studies that have empirically investigated a comprehensive model of employee engagement drivers and outcomes. To the best of the author's knowledge, such a study is the first of its kind undertaken in the Egyptian context.

TL;DR: A review of literature on the variety of theories in corporate governance can be found in this paper, where it is proposed that a mixture of various theories is best to describe an effective and efficient good governance practice rather than hypothesizing corporate governance based on a sole theory.
Abstract: The progression of theories or models of corporate governance, it is one of the new dimensions taken in a very crux of social ethics that is minimal and profit making took center stage. In this competitive world, companies are trying to inculcate the wisdom of good governance into their corporate organization. With the massive outpouring of capitalism, companies became stronger while governments around the globe had to accede to its influences and supremacy. However, this paper is a review of literature on the variety of theories in corporate governance. The ultimate theories in corporate governance started with the agency theory, extended into stewardship theory and stakeholder theory and evolved to resource dependency theory, political theory, legitimacy theory and social contract theory. However, these theories discourse the cause and consequence of variables, such as the formation of board structure, audit committee, independent non-executive directors and the duties of upper management and their organizational and social responsibilities rather than its regulatory structures. Similarly, it is proposed that a mixture of various theories is best to describe an effective and efficient good governance practice rather than hypothesizing corporate governance based on a sole theory.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explore and discuss the role of organizational learning in helping business firms to achieve sustainable competitive advantage and suggest that through organizational learning a firm can develop hard to imitate knowledge resources and capabilities (human capital as well as organizational capital) that create value which in turn lead to superior performance.
Abstract: Organizational learning is increasingly being considered as one of the fundamental sources of competitive advantage within the context of strategic management. However, most literature has not clearly linked organizational learning with sustainable competitive advantage. This paper, therefore, explores and discusses the role of organizational learning in helping business firms to achieve sustainable competitive advantage. Specifically, it deals with how organizational learning process can be used to develop knowledge resources and capabilities that lead to sustainable competitive advantage. This paper suggests that , through organizational learning a firm can develop hard to imitate knowledge resources and capabilities (human capital as well as organizational capital) that create value which in turn lead to superior performance.
