TL;DR: Stacey and Cowan as mentioned in this paper argued that families have lost functions power and authority that familism as a cultural value has diminished and that people have become less willing to invest time money and energy in family life turning instead to investments in themselves.
Abstract: Contrary to the view of some academics that the family in America is not declining but just changing the thesis of this article is that family decline since 1960 has been extraordinarily steep and its social consequences serious especially for children. Drawing mainly on U.S. Census data family trends of the past three decades are reviewed. The evidence for family decline is appraised in three areas: demographic institutional and cultural. It is argued that families have lost functions power and authority that familism as a cultural value has diminished and that people have become less willing to invest time money and energy in family life turning instead to investments in themselves. Comments by Norval D. Glenn Judith Stacey and Philip A. Cowan and a reply by Popenoe are included (pp. 542-55). (EXCERPT)

TL;DR: In this article, two measures of housework are created: the allocation of tasks and allocation of household management, and data from a survey of 359 married, full-time employed women tested the extend to which the two dimensions predict perception of fairness and conflict.
Abstract: The conceptualization and measurement of household allocation is critically discussed, and the suggestion that the measures need to be more theoritically based is made. Using the definition of housework as caring for family members, for the home, and for transactional matters, the distinction between task accomplishment and household management is integrated into the definition. Two measures of housework are created : the allocation of tasks and the allocation of household management. Using hierarchical regression models, data from a survey of 359 married, full-time employed women tested the extend to which the two dimensions predict perception of fairness and conflict.

TL;DR: In this paper, the AA report on a 40-year study of 169 college men and their wives examined marital satisfaction prospectively and retrospectively and found that marital satisfaction followed a weak curvilinear pattern with the lowest point of marriage at approximately 20 years.
Abstract: The AA. report on a 40-year study of 169 college men and their wives. They examined marital satisfaction prospectively and retrospectively. When examined retrospectively, marital satisfaction followed a weak curvilinear pattern with the lowest point of marriage at approximately 20 years. When studied prospectively, the U-curve disappeared and marital satisfaction remained relatively stable, particularly in the middle and later years. The difference between the spouses came only in their assesment of the difficulty of solving disagreements, which seemed for the wives to become more difficult over time. These patterns of marital satisfaction held true whether studied according to number of years married, age of each partner, or stage of the family life cycle.

TL;DR: This paper examined the extent to which cohabitation resembles marriage by comparing patterns of partner choice in the formation of married and cohabiting couples and found that choices of a co-habitation partner give greater weight than choices of marriage partner to achieved characteristics (such as education) which can reflect a short-term ability to contribute to the relationship.
Abstract: This paper examines the extent to which cohabitation resembles marriage by comparing patterns of partner choice in the formation of married and cohabiting couples....On the assumption that cohabitations are not informal marriages but relationships formed by a looser bond we use exchange theory to predict differences in partner choice. Since cohabitations are less permanent than marriages we hypothesize that choices of a cohabitation partner give greater weight than choices of a marriage partner to achieved characteristics (such as education) which can reflect a short-term ability to contribute to the relationship. In turn we expect that choices of a cohabitation partner give less weight to ascribed characteristics (such as age race and religion) that reflect long-term considerations. That study hypothesis is tested using propensities to marry and to cohabit calculated from the [U.S.] National Survey of Families and Households. (EXCERPT)

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated work-family connections and economic success among women and men small business owners and found that there is considerable gender similarity in the processes through which business and individual characteristics affect personal earnings.
Abstract: This study investigates work-family connections and economic success among women and men small business owners. We use what we term gender similarity and gender difference models to frame this investigation. The first model emphasizes the similarities between women and men in the processes through which work outcomes are determined. In contrast, the gender difference model assumes deeply rooted institutional and individual bases of gender difference. Analyses of data from a 3-year panel survey of 99 women and 312 men owners show more support for the gender similarity than the gender difference model. There is considerable gender similarity in the processes through which business and individual characteristics affect personal earnings, although women owners are disadvantaged in some characteristics critical to business success. Family situation has a direct impact on these owners' business success and indirectly affects personal earnings. We uncover vestiges of traditional gender roles consistent with the gender difference model, but primarily in the context of marriage. Thus, children are experienced as an incentive to fulfill the good provider role not only among married men but also by single women. The event history analyses show that these effects persist over time.

Abstract: In this article we use data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics to build on existing work concerning the timing and the process of leaving home to the different destinations of marriage and independent living in the United States....We find that among recent cohorts the trend has been towards leaving later particularly so for men. Moreover young people are more likely to leave to independent living and are less likely to leave to marriage....We also find substantial [effects from]...factors such as race and region characteristics of the family of origin the young persons own income resources and contextual variables such as unemployment. In particular we find that short-term changes in characteristics of family background have an important influence on the timing and destination of departures. (EXCERPT)

TL;DR: In this paper, a model was developed regarding direct and indirect effects of socialization and spousal attitudes upon the supportive parenting and harsh discipline of husbands and wives, and the data used to test the model were collected as part of the first two wawes of the Iowa Youth and Families Project, a longitudinal study of 451 two-parent families living in the Midwest.
Abstract: A model was developed regarding direct and indirect effects of socialization and spousal attitudes upon the supportive parenting and harsh discipline of husbands and wives. The data used to test the model were collected as part of the 1st two wawes of the Iowa Youth and Families Project, a longitudinal study of 451 two-parent families living in the Midwest. As hypothesized, quality of parenting received as a child, satisfaction with the parent-child relationship, education, and various parenting beliefs predicted the parenting practices of both mothers and fathers. As expected, wives' parenting beliefs and degree of satisfaction with the child influenced the quality of parenting of their husbands, whereas the reverse was not the case.

TL;DR: This article examined three data sets and found that many of these assumptions about custodial fathers are simply not true and argued that current child support policies should be re-examined to ensure that they follow the same principles when the custodial parent is the father as when the Custodial Parent is the mother.
Abstract: Men are increasingly receiving custody of their children, and single-father families with children are increasing at a faster rate than even single-mother families. Howewer, many observers still believe that there are few custodial fathers. Indeed, there are number of myths concerning custodial fathers. We examine three data sets and determine that many of these assumptions about custodial fathers are simply not true. We argue that current child support policies should be re-examined to ensure that they follow the same principles when the custodial parent is the father as when the custodial parent is the mother.

Abstract: The role of cohabitation in the legitimation of premarital conceptions is considered using data on a sample of 920 women from the [U.S.] National Survey of Families and Households....Cohabitation does not appear to be a substitute for marriage....Findings indicate that cohabitation is part of the legitimation process and that it influences white womens and black womens marital behavior differently. This is a revised version of a paper originally presented at the 1992 Annual Meeting of the Population Association of America. (EXCERPT)

TL;DR: This article found that the more adaptability, the better the outcomes for girls, but not for other family members, consistent with Beavers' theory, and found that cohesion has a direct linear relationship to positive outcomes.
Abstract: First, the AA. review theoritical controversies and methodological issues centering around tests of Olson's circumplex model, Beaver's system theory, and social support theory. Then, they derive hypotheses about the effects of cohesion and adaptability on family members' psychological functioning, behavior, and perceptions of family relationships. The dependent variables are depression, anxiety, identity diffusion, individuation, self-esteem, deviance, school misconduct, grades, marital agreement, and parent-child communication. Instead of a curvilinear effect, they find that cohesion has a direct linear relationship to positive outcomes, a finding consistent with social support theory. Consistent with Beavers' theory, they find that the more adaptability, the better the outcomes for girls, but not for other family members.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of mate availability mens and womens levels of socioeconomic status and employment level of public assistance population size and region on several aspects of family formation and family structure among African Americans were investigated.
Abstract: Census and vital statistics data for U.S. metropolitan areas in 1980 were analyzed to investigate the effects of mate availability mens and womens levels of socioeconomic status and employment level of public assistance population size and region on several aspects of family formation and family structure among African Americans. As predicted by theory mate availability as measured by the sex ratio had a positive effect on marriage prevalence for women and a negative effect on marriage prevalence for men....Mens socioeconomic status had positive effects on mens and womens marriage prevalence the prevalence of husband-wife families the percentage of children residing in husband-wife families and the percentage of marital births. Womens socioeconomic status and level of public assistance had negative effects on these variables. We conclude that mate availability mens socioeconomic status womens status and economic independence are important determinants of African American family formation and family structure. (EXCERPT)
