TL;DR: The authors distinguish between two types of entrepreneurs based on their motivation to engage in entrepreneurial activity: push entrepreneurs are those whose dissatisfaction with their positions, for reasons unrelated to their entrepreneurial characteristics, pushes them to start a venture.
Abstract: The adverse selection problem that is created because of asymmetry of information about entrepreneurs' attributes and abilities in turning ideas into viable businesses makes it difficult for venture capitalists or corporate executives to identify would-be successful entrepreneurs in advance. To mitigate this, and the related moral-hazard problem, we focus on an individual's motive to become an entrepreneur in the context of an individual's demographic and personal characteristics. We distinguish between two types of entrepreneurs based on their motivation to engage in entrepreneurial activity: “Push” entrepreneurs are those whose dissatisfaction with their positions, for reasons unrelated to their entrepreneurial characteristics, pushes them to start a venture. “Pull” entrepreneurs are those who are lured by their new venture idea and initiate venture activity because of the attractiveness of the business idea and its personal implications. TL;DR: In this paper, a theoretical framework of the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and empirically tested the four hypotheses derived from it is presented, which links together entrepreneurial competencies and SME performance with two further constructs: competitive scope and organizational capabilities.
Abstract: As an attempt to investigate the relationships between entrepreneurial characteristics and firm performance,we operationalized a theoretical framework of the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises(SMEs) and empirically tested the four hypotheses derived from it. The framework links together entrepreneurial competencies and SME performance with two further constructs: competitive scope and organizational capabilities. The empirical study consisted of a stage of instrument development specific to the research context, as well as a stage of hypothesis testing. The results of hypothesis testing, involving a sample of 153 owner/managers of SMEs, provided evidence for the direct and indirect contributions of the entrepreneur's opportunity, relationship, innovative, human and strategic competencies in affecting the long-term performance of an SME via competitive scope and organizational capabilities. This initial success, with the validated survey instrument of entrepreneurial competencie...

TL;DR: In this paper, a theoretical model of the relationship between firm-level entrepreneurship and firm performance is developed, which is intended to further clarify the consequences of an "entrepreneurial orientation, paying particular attention to the differential relationship that exists between the three sub-dimensions of entrepreneurial orientation and firms performance.
Abstract: This paper develops a theoretical model of the relationship between firm-level entrepreneurship and firm performance This model is intended to further clarify the consequences of an ‘entrepreneurial orientation,’ paying particular attention to the differential relationship that exists between the three sub-dimensions of entrepreneurial orientation and firm performance Included in the theoretical model are other important variables (such as organizational structure and environmental characteristics) that may impact the EO-performance relationship Propositions are developed regarding the various configurations of the sub-dimensions of EO and organizational structure that would be most appropriate in a given environmental context Future research may also benefit from considering the important role that organizational strategy and life cycle stage play in this model The implications of this model for both researchers and managers are discussed
