TL;DR: The upper lateral incisor was most frequently missing and was the tooth most often involved in the different combinations of congenitally missing teeth.
Abstract: Among 14,940 Evanston and Oak Park, Illinois, white and Negro students 11 to 15 years of age, there were 521 children in whom permanent teeth were congenitally missing. The incidence, frequency, and combinations of congenitally missing teeth were studied. An overall incidence of 3.49 was found. The upper lateral incisor was most frequently missing and was the tooth most often involved in the different combinations of congenitally missing teeth.

TL;DR: Tests of a new adhesive material that hardens when exposed to ultraviolet light showed 100% caries protection after one year in 200 deciduous and permanent teeth.
Abstract: Complete protection against caries was obtained when tooth surfaces were shielded from exposure to the oral environment. Tests of a new adhesive material that hardens when exposed to ultraviolet light showed 100% caries protection after one year in 200 deciduous and permanent teeth. Forty-two percent of the matched contralateral control teeth developed caries. This simple preventive measure requires only a few minutes per tooth, and lends itself to use by the dental hygienist after routine prophylaxis.

TL;DR: Clinical and radiographic examination of 53 cases completed two or more years before the study showed that in most cases the broken instrument had not resulted in failure, and tooth extraction or corrective surgery after instrument breakage is thought inadvisable.
Abstract: Opinion has differed on the prognosis of endodontically treated teeth in which intracanal instrument breakage has occurred. Clinical and radiographic examination of 53 cases completed two or more years before the study showed that in most cases the broken instrument had not resulted in failure. Consequently, tooth extraction or corrective surgery after instrument breakage is thought inadvisable.

TL;DR: The study indicates that pain reactions seldom occur when a fistula is present, or in maxillary anterior teeth, so factors of prognostic importance in predicting pain are delineated.
Abstract: Various drugs and treatments have been advocated to decrease pain reactions after endodontic treatment. The present study is an attempt to delineate factors of prognostic importance in predicting pain. Frequency of post treatment pain and other factors were recorded. The study indicates that pain reactions seldom occur when a fistula is present, or in maxillary anterior teeth.

TL;DR: Results show that periapical granulomas from cysts occur with almost equal frequency, that radiographic diagnosis has a 60% chance of reliability, and that size of the lesions is of diagnostic value only for lesions measuring more than 200 mm 2 .
Abstract: Conflicting data make it difficult for the practitioner to differentiate periapical granulomas from cysts. In this study, additional information was sought. Results show that both entities occur with almost equal frequency, that radiographic diagnosis has a 60% chance of reliability, and that size of the lesions is of diagnostic value only for lesions measuring more than 200 mm 2 .

TL;DR: The carboxylate cement was distinctly superior in its adhesion to both enamel and dentin under tensile loading, but little difference was observed when both cements were evaluated by measuring the tensile force needed to remove Class I inlays.
Abstract: Properties of a zinc phosphate and a carboxylate cement were measured and compared. Solubility, setting time, film thickness, and pH were similar, and tensile strengths were in the same range. The carboxylate cement was distinctly superior in its adhesion to both enamel and dentin under tensile loading, but little difference was observed when both cements were evaluated by measuring the tensile force needed to remove Class I inlays.

TL;DR: A dental survey of schoolchildren was made in Antigo shortly before controlled fluoridation was discontinued, and again just after it was reinstituted, additional surveys were made.
Abstract: A dental survey of schoolchildren was made in Antigo shortly before controlled fluoridation was discontinued. DMF rates were comparable to those of other fluoridated areas in the state. Four years after fluoridation was discontinued, and again, just after it was reinstituted, additional surveys were made. DMF rates had greatly increased and were characteristic of rates found in nonfluoridated areas in the state.

TL;DR: Fluorescent dye was used to record the occurrence of craze lines during in vitro stainless steel pin procedures, and the self-threading regular pin group produced more Craze lines than did the other pin groups.
Abstract: Fluorescent dye was used to record the occurrence of craze lines during in vitro stainless steel pin procedures. Pinholes were drilled in dentin at various distances from the dentinoenamel junction, and friction-lock and self-threading pins were inserted in the pinholes. Under the conditions of this study, the self-threading regular pin group produced more craze lines than did the other pin groups.

TL;DR: Fiber optics applied to transillumination of teeth and other oral structures is a useful technic for detection of caries, calculus, and soft tissue lesions.
Abstract: Fiber optics applied to transillumination of teeth and other oral structures is a useful technic for detection of caries, calculus, and soft tissue lesions. It permits a cold, high-intensity light source to be used anywhere in the oral cavity with ease and flexibility. It often shows the degree of undermined carious tooth structure more accurately than the usual bitewing radiograph, and may aid in diagnosis of periapical and periodontal abscesses before bony destruction has occurred or swelling is apparent.

TL;DR: To define the rule of various intrinsic hormonal factors and their relative importance in normal dental development, a study was made of dental growth in patients with known endocrine or metabolic dysfunction.
Abstract: To define the rule of various intrinsic hormonal factors and their relative importance in normal dental development, a study was made of dental growth in patients with known endocrine or metabolic dysfunction. Skeletal and dental ages were determined radiographically and compared with chronologic age to learn the effect of the disease on the rate of development.

TL;DR: Findings suggest that one in seven dental offices is contaminated to the extent that the dentist and his assistant are exposed to hygienically significant amounts of mercury vapor throughout the workday.
Abstract: The exposure of dentists and dental assistants to mercury vapor was studied. Findings suggest that one in seven dental offices is contaminated to the extent that the dentist and his assistant are exposed to hygienically significant amounts of mercury vapor throughout the workday. Exposures ranged to 0.18 mg mercury vapor per cubic meter of air (mg/meter³). Urine mercury levels ranged to 0.33 mg mercury per liter urine (mg/liter) and were correlated with exposure. The modes of contamination and decontamination are discussed.

TL;DR: Criteria are proposed for identifying lesions of the two conditions: recurrent intraoral herpes simplex and those of recurrent aphthae.
Abstract: The lesions of recurrent intraoral herpes simplex and those of recurrent aphthae are clinically and etiologically different. Failure to recognize the difference may be due to conflicting terminology used in the literature, the transient nature of changes detectable by cytology, and the short period in which herpes virus is isolable from oral lesions. Criteria are proposed for identifying lesions of the two conditions.

TL;DR: Analysis of routine panoramic radiographs showed six types of lesions in the 2,486 patients examined, with the most common lesion being embedded teeth.
Abstract: Analysis of routine panoramic radiographs showed six types of lesions in the 2,486 patients examined. In a total of 463 different types of lesions there were 645 occurrences of abnormality, the most common lesion being embedded teeth. Oral pathologic conditions that occurred in 17% of the patients gave evidence of poor dental care.

TL;DR: Dentistry is practiced in the context of the dentist-patient relationship, a relationship that develops according to the psychology of both the patient and the dentist.
Abstract: Dentistry is practiced in the context of the dentist-patient relationship, a relationship that develops according to the psychology of both the patient and the dentist. Potential complications of the relationship have their source in the dentist’s character and emotional needs, the patient’s character, and, on occasion, the patient’s actual psychological illness.

TL;DR: A radiopaque composite restorative material was developed using a ternary eutectic dimethacrylate liquid formulation as the binder and a BaF 2 -containing glass and fused silica as the reinforcing fillers that had sufficient radiopacity and yet were esthetically pleasing.
Abstract: A radiopaque composite restorative material was developed using a ternary eutectic dimethacrylate liquid formulation as the binder and a BaF 2 -containing glass and fused silica as the reinforcing fillers. One hundred and ten restorations were placed with this newly developed material. The restorations will be observed for an extended time. They had sufficient radiopacity and yet were esthetically pleasing. Postoperative radiographs showed comparatively radiolucent areas in and around many of the restorations. These radiolucencies were usually caused by unfilled spaces at the tooth restoration interface.

TL;DR: In this study of 22 teeth reimplanted in baboons, distal root resorption was found to be significant after 12 months and was thought to be clastic cells derived from mesenchymal cells in the periodontal membrane.
Abstract: Controversy has existed about the causes for resorption of reimplanted teeth. In this study of 22 teeth reimplanted in baboons, distal root resorption was found to be significant after 12 months. The cause of resorption was thought to be clastic cells that were probably derived from mesenchymal cells in the periodontal membrane.

TL;DR: Conclusions are that pulpal hyperemia is a distinct histologic entity and that diagnosis requires use of the various tests in conjunction.
Abstract: This study was made to learn if pulpal hyperemia is a pathologic entity or a product of pulp tests, anesthetic, and extraction procedures. Effects of age, caries, and restorations also were studied and an assessment was made of the effects of heat, cold, and the electric pulp tester. Conclusions are that pulpal hyperemia is a distinct histologic entity and that diagnosis requires use of the various tests in conjunction.

TL;DR: A six-year study, designed to compare time and cost factors involved in providing regular dental care to children in fluoridated and nonfluoridated areas, indicates the advantages of a public health caries-prophylactic procedure.
Abstract: A six-year study, designed to compare time and cost factors involved in providing regular dental care to children in fluoridated and nonfluoridated areas, indicates the advantages of a public health caries-prophylactic procedure. Cost of dental care for children who drank fluoridated water from infancy was less than half that for those who did not. Less time was needed for dental care of children in the fluoridated area. Detailed comparison shows the extent of economic benefits and improved dental health resulting from this procedure.

TL;DR: The material covered in the paper should be helpful to dental personnel and dental health agencies in their promotional efforts in preventive dentistry and in developing and managing the increasing number of comprehensive dental programs for children.
Abstract: Hundreds of clinical studies conducted during the past 25 years have evaluated the use of topical fluorides in protecting the enamel surface of teeth from caries attack. These investigations have led to the development of the various topical fluoride procedures that are available today. This paper summarizes current knowledge on the subject by reviewing pertinent studies and by pinpointing the conclusions they support. The material covered in the paper should be helpful to dental personnel and dental health agencies in their promotional efforts in preventive dentistry and in developing and managing the increasing number of comprehensive dental programs for children.

TL;DR: Because of irritation produced by all the resins studied, the authors believe that these resins should be placed over protective liners in deep cavity preparations.
Abstract: A controlled clinical study of 137 teeth was conducted to determine the histologic pulp response to different restorative resins. The protective effects of remaining dentin and preoperative irregular dentin were reaffirmed. Because of irritation produced by all the resins studied, the authors believe that these resins should be placed over protective liners in deep cavity preparations.

TL;DR: Gram-negative infections, definitely related to the use of antibiotics, have increased—in the mouth, as well as elsewhere—at such a rate that they are displacing the staphylococcus in some populations.
Abstract: Although the replacement of streptococci by staphylococci as the prime pathogens in many types of infection has been a well-established fact for almost 15 years, a new phenomenon has been observed recently. Gram-negative infections, definitely related to the use of antibiotics, have increased—in the mouth, as well as elsewhere—at such a rate that they are displacing the staphylococcus in some populations.

TL;DR: A study was made of a family afflicted with Rothmund’s syndrome where dental abnormalities were found in the afflicted siblings as well as the “normal” members of the family.
Abstract: A study was made of a family afflicted with Rothmund’s syndrome. Particular attention was given to the morphology of the tooth crowns. Dental abnormalities were found in the afflicted siblings as well as the “normal” members of the family. The genetic hypothesis given for this situation existing in the extended family is one of autosomal recessive inheritance.
