Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Very high concentrations of copper lead, zinc, and to a lesser extent mercury, are present in the estuary of the Rio Tinto in South-West Spain this paper, and the concentrations of these metals fall very sharply towards the natural levels of the metals in organisms living in this part of the Atlantic.

112 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The results of this study indicate there is a need for a moratorium on the use of this species for human consumption as discussed by the authors, and that there is also a significant correlation between mercury and selenium concentrations, and concentrations of both those elements are significantly correlated to size of fish.

104 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The distribution of metals in estuaries can be modified as a result of chemical reactions that take place within the sediment column as mentioned in this paper, which can drastically alter the partition of metals between solid phases and solution.

102 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Poole Harbour is an important south-coast recreational area and supports considerable local industry as well as a small oyster fishery as mentioned in this paper, and it is the conflict between industry and the shell fishery that forms the basis of this study.

98 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The histopathology of ‘shell disease’, the causative agents and its effects on respiration are discussed in connexion with a possible association with the disposal of solid wastes into the ocean.

75 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The results suggest that in certain marine organisms organo-arsenics predominate and are less toxic than inorganic arsenic compounds.

69 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the concentration and distribution of thirteen elements are reported and the concentrations of tin, zinc and lead, in particular, may have ecological consequences and should be viewed with some concern.

64 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, high levels of mercury occur in mussels taken from the vicinity of the Rhine and Eems Dollard, and values on the British coast are generally higher than on the east side of the North Sea.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Collection of surviving clams for histological examination revealed a high incidence of gonadal tumours in clams contaminated by the oil and the tumours were found to be malignant neoplasms.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, small particles of weathered pelagic tar are suggested as a major source of hydrocarbons found in surface microlayer and subsurface water samples collected in the Sargasso Sea.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Cracking and pitting of the exoskeleton and tests of the effects of an antibiotic indicated a possible infectious etiology, and the disease may be related to pollution of the habitat by organic wastes including cellulose.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: A statewide survey of Tasmanian coastal waters has shown that Platycephalus bassensis, a widespread, easily-caught, non-migratory demersal finfish, is a useful indicator species for mercury pollution.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, Neutron activation analysis indicates concentrations of antimony, arsenic, chromium, gold, mercury, silver and zinc are 8-200 times greater than in the surrounding uncontaminated sediments.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: A survey of fin erosion among fish in oceanic and estuarine waters of New York Bight was carried out in this article, showing that almost all fin erosion was confined to demersal flat fish, particularly the winter flounder.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The eggs of two groups of oysters containing significantly different levels of copper and cadmium were collected, the eggs were collected and trace metal contents measured, and no conclusion could be made about the transfer of these three metals from adults to eggs of oyster.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this study four Panamanian coral species have been exposed to marine diesel and bunker oil, which may cause delayed death, but probably more importantly interfere with feeding and metabolism at sub-lethal concentrations.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The concentration of dissolved mercury in sea water has been determined in a number of areas in the northern and southern hemispheres and an attempt has been made to correlate the values found for certain areas with natural physical phenomena.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Water soluble extracts of three crude oils, Kuwait, Nigerian and Prudhoe Bay have been tested using the sperm and eggs of two marine bivalves, finding that spermatozoa, in particular, are very sensitive to the water-soluble fractions of these oils.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the half-life of hydrocarbons in the mussels was calculated to be a little over 3 1 2 days, but this relates only to the initial rapid phase of elimination.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The results tentatively suggest that there may be a correlation between cadmium levels and reduced ability to utilize glucose.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Oiled birds appear to be a commoner aspect of oil pollution where it occurs with cold water-temperatures, whereas the formation of tar-balls becomes more prominent with warm ones, possibly because liquid oil becomes reduced to inert solid residues comparatively harmless to birds more rapidly at higher temperatures.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors reported that soft clams fell by 20% in two years following oil pollution although in adjacent mudflats production of them increased by 250% by transplanting uncontaminated clams into this area.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: A simple rapid bioassay test in which the effect of pollutants on the burrowing of the bivalve Tellina tenuis has been used as a quantitative measure of pollutant effect.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: An oil spill into Long Cove, Searsport, Maine, began on 16 March and lasted until at least 30 June 1971, and resulted in immediate and continuing soft clam mortalities which, based on before and after biological surveys, had by August 1974 exceeded 85% of the estimated 50 million market-size clams occupying the area as discussed by the authors.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: There is evidence that further increase in nutrients would cause undesirable extension of algal mats in the estuary and this situation is not yet damaging to wildfowl.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Studies on the effect of oil on DNA and RNA of some Black Sea algae suggests that it inhibits biosynthesis of these compounds and modifies the degree of polymerization of deoxyribonucleic acids.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The use of the dispersant, Oilsperse 43, increased the dispersion of Venezuelan Guanipa crude oil and appeared to retard formation of the familiar "crust" on the surface.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Oysters are faecally contaminated, particularly in the summer months when the rain-bearing south-east monsoon flushes out the rivers, streams and watercourses (drains) into the oyster producing areas as discussed by the authors.
