TL;DR: MVD of TN is safe and effective, but excellent outcome is dependent on choice of patients and deliberate operative technique.
Abstract: Objective To study operative technique and therapeutic effect of microvascular decompression(MVD) of trigeminal neuralgia(TN).Methods 124 patients who were operated on by microvascular decompression were analyzed about their clinical data, intraoperative finding and follow-up results. Results 103 patients were followed up.Average follow-up time was 2.3 years.Complete pain relief was achieved in 92 patients(89.3%),9 patients achieved partial pain relief,2 patients had no response.88 patients were suffered by arterial compression,23 patients by venous compression,8 patients by arterial and venous compression, and 5 patients by no vascular compression.5 patients with no vascular compression were operated on by partial sensory rhizotomy.Postoperatively, cerebellar hematomas were formed at 5 patients who were evacuated by craniotomy and cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea took place at 1 patient. No patient died. Conclusion MVD of TN is safe and effective, but excellent outcome is dependent on choice of patients and deliberate operative technique.

TL;DR: Xiaoqiongtang decoction can reduce airway inflammation and reverse airway remodeling, and increase expression of MMP-9 in induced sputum in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Abstract: Objective To study the effects of Xiaoqinglongtang decoction on the cell counts and the levels of IL-8 and MMP-9 in induced sputum in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD).Methods A total of 80 patients with stable COPD were enrolled and randomly divided into 2 groups, including test group and COPD control group.40 nonsmoke healthy individuals were enrolled in control group. All patients with COPD were treated with salmeterol/fluticasone(50μg/100μg).The test group was treated with Xiaoqiongtang decoction. The cell counts and the levels of IL-8 and MMP-9 were measured. Results The total cell counts and the percentage of neutrophils cell counts and sputum supernatant concentration of MMP-9 of COPD in test group were lower than that of the COPD control group after treatment. The sputum supernatant concentration of IL-8 of COPD decveased slightly in all groups. Conclusions Xiaoqiongtang decoction can decrease the total cell counts and the percentage of neutrophils cell counts and increase expression of MMP-9.Xiaoqiongtang decoction can reduce airway inflammation and reverse airway remodeling.

TL;DR: Investigation of the association of the polymorphisms of interleukin-18(IL-18)-137G/C,607C/A polymorphisms and the risk of nasopharyngeal carcinoma in Han population from Sichuan China found genetic polymorphism of IL-18-137G/.
Abstract: Objective To investigate the association of the polymorphisms of interleukin-18(IL-18)-137G/C,-607C/A polymorphisms and the risk of nasopharyngeal carcinoma in Han population from Sichuan China. Methods A case-control study was conducted involving 150 nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients and 180 healthy controls to investigate the association between the polymorphism of IL-18-137G/C,-607C/A and the risk of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. The genotypes were determined by PCR-RFLP,PCR-SSCP technique. Results The difference of IL-18-137G/C polymorphism genotypes frequency between cases and controls was significant(P0.05),and the-137G/C polymorphism could be associated with the risk of nasopharyngeal carcinoma genesis. The allele C could increase the risk of nasopharyngeal carcinoma(OR=1.783,95%CI between 1.208 to 2.634),and the-607C/A polymorphism was not associated with the development of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Conclusion Genetic polymorphism of IL-18-137G/C may be associated with the risk of nasopharyngeal carcinoma genesis.

TL;DR: Results reveals that curcumin could inhibit the development of endometriotic foci through interfering angiogenesis while without any effect on the serum E2 level in rat models.
Abstract: Objective To observe the potential role of curcumin in controlling the development of endometriotic foci in rats with experimental endometriosis and determine whether it interfere with the serous estrogen level. Methods Model endometriosis was established successfully in 30 female SD rats. These 30rats were randomly divided into three groups, with curcumin(150mg/Kg/d,curcumin group),gestrinone(0.5mg/kg/d,gestrinone group) and normal saline(3ml/d,model group) intragastrically administered for three continuous weeks, respectively.Sham operation was performed in another 10 female SD rats of same age as sham control(sham group). The volume and weight of ectopic endometrium were measured, estrogen level in serum was detected.Microvessel density(MVD) in eutopic(sham group) and ectopic endometrium(the other three groups)was assessed by immunohistochemical staining. Results Four weeks after administration, significantly reduced volume and weight of endometriotic foci was observed in curcumin and gestrinone groups,as compared with model group, and no significant difference was found between curcumin and gestrinone group(P0.05).Serum E2 level in gestrinone group was decreased significantly compared with model group(P=0.005),and no difference was detected in curcumin group as compared with model and sham group. Both curcumin(P=0.004) and gestrinone groups(P=0.016) present with decreased MVD in ectopic endometrium as compared with model group. Conclusions Our results reveals that curcumin could inhibit the development of endometriotic foci through interfering angiogenesis while without any effect on the serum E2 level in rat models.

TL;DR: Serum copper, iron and zinc are related with the occurrence of gynecological malignancies and are significantly higher than that with normal control group.
Abstract: Objective To research the relationship between serum copper, iron, zinc, calcium, manganese content and gynecological malignancies. Methods By atomic absorption spectrophotometry, the serum copper, iron, zinc, calcium, manganese of 130 cases patients with gynecological malignancies and 260 health women were measured. Results The serum copper levels within 25 cases of breast cancer patients,26 cases of endometrial cancer patients,38 cases of ovarian cancer patients,41 cases of cervical cancer patients were 20.44±2.86μmol/L,17.54±3.85μmol/L,6.84±2.21μmol/L,14.23±3.15μmol/L,respectively,which were significantly higher than that with normal control group(P 0.05).The serum iron and zinc in gynecological malignancies patients were lower than that in control(P0.05).Conclusion Serum copper, iron and zinc are related with the occurrence of gynecological malignancies.
