TL;DR: In this paper, the authors review the recent progress in tunable and reconfigurable metasurfaces and metadevices through different active materials deployed together with the different control mechanisms including electrical, thermal, optical, mechanical, and magnetic, and provide the perspective for their future development for applications.
Abstract: Metasurfaces, two-dimensional equivalents of metamaterials, are engineered surfaces consisting of deep subwavelength features that have full control of the electromagnetic waves. Metasurfaces are not only being applied to the current devices throughout the electromagnetic spectrum from microwave to optics but also inspiring many new thrilling applications such as programmable on-demand optics and photonics in future. In order to overcome the limits imposed by passive metasurfaces, extensive researches have been put on utilizing different materials and mechanisms to design active metasurfaces. In this paper, we review the recent progress in tunable and reconfigurable metasurfaces and metadevices through the different active materials deployed together with the different control mechanisms including electrical, thermal, optical, mechanical, and magnetic, and provide the perspective for their future development for applications.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors focus on the recent developments of wave field manipulations based on artificial microstructures and classify some important applications from the viewpoint of different dimensional manipulations of wave fields.
Abstract: Artificial microstructures, which allow us to control and change the properties of wave fields through changing the geometrical parameters and the arrangements of microstructures, have attracted plenty of attentions in the past few decades. Some artificial microstructure based research areas, such as metamaterials, metasurfaces and phononic topological insulators, have seen numerous novel applications and phenomena. The manipulation of different dimensions (phase, amplitude, frequency or polarization) of wave fields, particularly, can be easily achieved at subwavelength scales by metasurfaces. In this review, we focus on the recent developments of wave field manipulations based on artificial microstructures and classify some important applications from the viewpoint of different dimensional manipulations of wave fields. The development tendency of wave field manipulation from single-dimension to multidimensions provides a useful guide for researchers to realize miniaturized and integrated optical and acoustic devices.

TL;DR: In this paper, a review of Femtosecond-laser-direct writing (FsLDW) fabrication of waveguide structures with 3D layouts in dielectric crystals is presented.
Abstract: Optical waveguides are far more than mere connecting elements in integrated optical systems and circuits. Benefiting from their high optical confinement and miniaturized footprints, waveguide structures established based on crystalline materials, particularly, are opening exciting possibilities and opportunities in photonic chips by facilitating their on-chip integration with different functionalities and highly compact photonic circuits. Femtosecond-laser-direct writing (FsLDW), as a true three-dimensional (3D) micromachining and microfabrication technology, allows rapid prototyping of on-demand waveguide geometries inside transparent materials via localized material modification. The success of FsLDW lies not only in its unsurpassed aptitude for realizing 3D devices but also in its remarkable material-independence that enables cross-platform solutions. This review emphasizes FsLDW fabrication of waveguide structures with 3D layouts in dielectric crystals. Their functionalities as passive and active photonic devices are also demonstrated and discussed.

TL;DR: In this article, a remote-mode microsphere nano-imaging platform is proposed to increase the observation power of optical microscopy by enabling the detection to be non-invasive, dynamic, real-time, and label-free.
Abstract: Optical microscope is one of the most popular characterization techniques for general purposes in many fields. It is distinguished from the vacuum or tip-based imaging techniques for its flexibility, low cost, and fast speed. However, its resolution limits the functionality of current optical imaging performance. While microspheres have been demonstrated for improving the observation power of optical microscope, they are directly deposited on the sample surface and thus the applications are greatly limited. We develop a remote-mode microsphere nano-imaging platform which can scan freely and in real-time across the sample surfaces. It greatly increases the observation power and successfully characterizes various practical samples with the smallest feature size down to 23 nm. This method offers many unique advantages, such as enabling the detection to be non-invasive, dynamic, real-time, and label-free, as well as leading to more functionalities in ambient air and liquid environments, which extends the nano-scale observation power to a broad scope in our life.
