TL;DR: This paper reviewed econometric methods for dynamic panel data models, and presented examples that illustrate the use of these procedures for the analysis of large number of individuals or firms observed for a small number of time periods.
Abstract: This paper reviews econometric methods for dynamic panel data models, and presents examples that illustrate the use of these procedures The focus is on panels where a large number of individuals or firms are observed for a small number of time periods, typical of applications with microeconomic data The emphasis is on single equation models with autoregressive dynamics and explanatory variables that are not strictly exogenous, and hence on the Generalised Method of Moments estimators that are widely used in this context Two examples using firm-level panels are discussed in detail: a simple autoregressive model for investment rates; and a basic production function

TL;DR: The authors provide an overview of inverse probability weighted estimators for cross section and two-period panel data applications under an ignorability assumption, and provide straightforward and asymptotically normal estimation methods.
Abstract: I provide an overview of inverse probability weighted (IPW) M-estimators for cross section and two-period panel data applications. Under an ignorability assumption, I show that population parameters are identified, and provide straightforward \(\sqrt{N}\)-consistent and asymptotically normal estimation methods. I show that estimating a binary response selection model by conditional maximum likelihood leads to a more efficient estimator than using known probabilities, a result that unifies several disparate results in the literature. But IPW estimation is not a panacea: in some important cases of nonresponse, unweighted estimators will be consistent under weaker ignorability assumptions.

TL;DR: In the second half of the 1990s, the prospect of entry in the euro led to an output boom and large current account deficits in Portugal as mentioned in this paper, and since then, the boom has turned into a slump.
Abstract: In the second half of the 1990s, the prospect of entry in the euro led to an output boom and large current account deficits in Portugal. Since then, the boom has turned into a slump. Current account deficits are still large, and so are budget deficits. This paper reviews the facts, the likely adjustment in the absence of major policy changes, and examines policy options. TL;DR: In this article, the authors used the integrated assessment model FUND to estimate the extent of climate change impacts on the North Atlantic region and Northern and Western Europe, and found that even with a thermohaline circulation collapse, the total and marginal impacts on climate change are negative.
Abstract: Climate change can lead to a substantial reduction of the strength of the thermohaline circulation in the world oceans. This is often thought to have severe consequences particularly on the North Atlantic region and Northern and Western Europe. The integrated assessment model FUND is used to estimate the extent of these impacts. The results indicate that, owing to a slower warming (rather than cooling) of the regions most affected by a thermohaline circulation collapse, climate change induced damages in these regions would be smaller in case of a shutdown of the thermohaline circulation. However, even with a thermohaline circulation collapse, the total and marginal impacts of climate change are negative.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the importance of tourism as a conditioning factor for higher regional growth in Portugal by employing the conditional convergence hypothesis of Barro and Sala-i-Martin, associated with the endogenous growth theory.
Abstract: The role of tourism is of vital economic importance, particularly for small countries with a privileged geographical location and favourable weather conditions. This paper examines the importance of tourism as a conditioning factor for higher regional growth in Portugal by employing the conditional convergence hypothesis of Barro and Sala-i-Martin, associated with the endogenous growth theory. The panel data estimation approach provides evidence of the positive impact of tourism (through the accommodation capacity) on the growth in per-capita income among the Portuguese regions, increasing the rate of convergence. Therefore, tourism can be considered as an alternative source for stimulating higher regional growth in Portugal, if the supply characteristics of this sector are improved.
