TL;DR: A comparative study of 98 cases of myeloid metaplasia and 93 cases of chronic granulocytic leukemia suggests a common pathogenetic mechanism and the laboratory procedures most helpful in differentiation were leukocyte alkaline phosphatase determinations and cytogenetic studies.
Abstract: A comparative study of 98 cases of myeloid metaplasia and 93 cases of chronic granulocytic leukemia suggests a common pathogenetic mechanism. The laboratory procedures most helpful in differentiation were leukocyte alkaline phosphatase determinations and cytogenetic studies. Acute leukemia occurring in four cases of myeloid metaplasia supports the theory that polycythemia vera, myeloid metaplasia, and chronic and acute granulocytic leukemia constitute a spectrum of myeloproliferative disorders.

TL;DR: Although ankylosing spondylitis is a common disease, it often goes unrecognized for many years and not much of the deformity that may otherwise result is known.
Abstract: Although ankylosing spondylitis is a common disease, it often goes unrecognized for many years. Early diagnosis, education of the patient, and adherence to a carefully planned program of treatment will prevent much of the deformity that may otherwise result. Employability and economic independence can be maintained by the vast majority of patients.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that young people who approach doctors for assistance must be treated as individuals who are in a difficult time of life when a young patient needs contraceptive assistance the doctor should not refuse merely because the patient is young or lacks parental consent and there has been no single instance of legal action against a doctor who gave contraceptive assistance where parental consent was lacking.
Abstract: Unwanted pregnancy is a disease with consequences that affect every level of society Illegitimacy is rising to the point where it is a major social problem Findings of the National Center for Health Statistics show that in the 1940-1965 period illegitimacy tripled More than 40% of unwed mothers are teenagers It is clear that young people who approach doctors for assistance must be treated as individuals who are in a difficult time of life When a young patient needs contraceptive assistance the doctor should not refuse merely because the patient is young or lacks parental consent So far there has been no single instance of legal action against a doctor who gave contraceptive assistance where parental consent was lacking

TL;DR: All that is needed to correct massive rectal prolapse is a restraining sling placed around the abnormally mobile rectum and fixed to the sacrum, with minimal mortality and morbidity.
Abstract: Massive rectal prolapse causes fecal incontinence, with formidable psychologic trauma. Many such patients avoid all social contacts. All that is needed to correct this condition is a restraining sling placed around the abnormally mobile rectum and fixed to the sacrum. This simple operation offers the best results, with minimal mortality and morbidity.

TL;DR: The plasma concentration of growth hormone reaches a peak within one or two hours after the onset of sleep, and during most of the day the levels may be almost unmeasurable.
Abstract: The plasma concentration of growth hormone reaches a peak within one or two hours after the onset of sleep. During most of the day the levels may be almost unmeasurable. The conditions under which plasma is obtained for testing assume great significance in view of the unusual normal secretory pattern. Some applications and limitations of growth hormone assays are considered.

TL;DR: Magnesium has long been considered a mysterious cation of relative unimportance in clinical medicine, but atomic absorption methods have made possible reliable determinations of magnesium in body fluids.
Abstract: Magnesium has long been considered a mysterious cation of relative unimportance in clinical medicine. Atomic absorption methods have made possible reliable determinations of magnesium in body fluids. Its importance in growth and development is unquestioned, although little is known about its homeostatic regulation or role in disease states.

TL;DR: Wider and earlier use of synovectomy in all surgically accessible joints will probably be the greatest contribution of orthopedic surgery in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.
Abstract: When adequate medical management of the rheumatoid arthritic patient proves ineffective, surgery is often indicated. The most promising surgical procedure is synovectomy. Wider and earlier use of synovectomy in all surgically accessible joints will probably be the greatest contribution of orthopedic surgery in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.

TL;DR: The possibility of a significant association between Hashimoto's thyroiditis and systemic lupus erythematosus is of considerable interest and evidence suggesting such an association is accumulating.
Abstract: The possibility of a significant association between Hashimoto's thyroiditis and systemic lupus erythematosus is of considerable interest. Two cases of coexisting Hashimoto's thyroiditis proved by biopsy and systemic lupus erythematosus proved by the clinical picture and positive lupus erythematosus clot tests contribute to accumulating evidence suggesting such an association.

TL;DR: With so many people traveling to areas of the country where coccidioidomycosis is endemic, recognizing this disease has become a matter of concern to physicians in every state.
Abstract: With so many people traveling to areas of the country where coccidioidomycosis is endemic, recognizing this disease has become a matter of concern to physicians in every state. A history of exposure is an essential clue in diagnosis, but absence from an endemic area for a considerable time does not exclude the possibility of the disease.

TL;DR: A calcium stone (about 90 percent of stones contain calcium) often signifies hypercalcemia; uric acid stone, accelerated nucleic acid breakdown; triple phosphate stone, urinary tract infection; and cystine or xanthine stone, inborn metabolic errors.
Abstract: Why analyze kidney stones? This is more than an academic question, for the answer may help the physician identify the source of the stone. A calcium stone (about 90 percent of stones contain calcium) often signifies hypercalcemia; uric acid stone, accelerated nucleic acid breakdown; triple phosphate stone, urinary tract infection; and cystine or xanthine stone, inborn metabolic errors.

TL;DR: When supporting tissues of the birth canal are weakened, genital prolapse may occur and only repair of the primary weakness can stem progression and prevent recurrence.
Abstract: When supporting tissues of the birth canal are weakened, genital prolapse may occur. Prolapse is seen as a manifestation of upper vaginal inversion, lower vaginal eversion, or both. The rate of progression may give clues to etiology and prognosis, but the physician must determine the site of primary damage. Only repair of the primary weakness can stem progression and prevent recurrence.

Abstract: The psychologic response to last rites was investigated in a study of 30 patients hospitalized with a tentative diagnosis of myocardial infarction. Only four responded negatively. How the sacrament is administered seems to be the most important accessible variable affecting anxiety. It was most helpful when it was personal and specifically reassuring, stressed the routine nature of the procedure, and made reference to healing and recovery.

TL;DR: The Guillain-Barre syndrome has a slower onset, often follows a nonspecific illness, more commonly causes symmetrical paralysis, usually elevates the spinal fluid protein, may lead to sensory loss, tends to recur, and rarely results in permanent paralysis.
Abstract: Of the lower motor neuron diseases, poliomyelitis and Guillain-Barre syndrome are the most likely to be confused with one another. Yet the two diseases differ. The Guillain-Barre syndrome has a slower onset, often follows a nonspecific illness, more commonly causes symmetrical paralysis, usually elevates the spinal fluid protein, may lead to sensory loss, tends to recur, and rarely results in permanent paralysis.

TL;DR: The basis for the metyrapone test of pituitary function is described, and the carbon tetrachloride-extractable 11-DOCS response is superior to the 17-KGS or 17-OHCS end point.
Abstract: The basis for the metyrapone test of pituitary function is described. The carbon tetrachloride-extractable 11-DOCS response is superior to the 17-KGS or 17-OHCS end point. Patients with renal failure require a plasma 11-DOCS measurement for evaluation. Some patients with cirrhosis of the liver fail to give a normal plasma and urinary 11-DOCS response. Patients with Cushing's syndrome due to primary adrenal tumor give a subnormal 11-DOCS response, whereas those with adrenal hyperplasia respond normally.
