TL;DR: A modified and extended families system in which the nuclear family is not isolated but is part of an extended kin family system integrated within a network of social relationships and mutual assistance that operates along bi-lateral kin lines and vertically over several generations.
Abstract: Technological, economic, social, political, and cultural developments during the last seventyfive years have been remarkable in our society and in many societies around the world. They have created a new context for growing up, living as adults, and growing older. The existence of three and four generation families is one of the outstanding phenomena of our age. Today families are more urbanized and the emerging pattern of family life is increasingly one of separate households that still maintain viable and supportive family relationships. Marvin Sussman called this the \"modified and extended families system in which the nuclear family is not isolated but is part of an extended kin family system integrated within a network of social relationships and mutual assistance that operates along bi-lateral kin lines and vertically over several generations.\" I The elderly can be divided among the younger-older generation and the older-older generation; each one must relate to the previous generation as well as to a subsequent generation.
