TL;DR: An analysis of 2074 papers published on different aspects of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) during 1991 to 2010 and indexed by Science Citation Index-Expanded indicates that the output increased many folds since 1991 except for a significant dip in 2005 as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: An analysis of 2074 papers published on different aspects of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) during 1991 to 2010 and indexed by Science Citation Index-Expanded indicates that the output increased many folds since 1991 except for a significant dip in 2005. These papers were scattered in 501 journal titles, which originated from 29 different countries. Total output came from 62 countries of which 14 countries contributed 90% of the total output. The highest number of publications came from USA, followed by India. The publication activity increased significantly in China, South Korea, France, Austria, Singapore, Germany and decreased for Japan in the second block. Data indicates that about 87% of the total output is concentrated among 15 sub-disciplines and the remaining in other 53 sub-disciplines. Highest output (18%) is in the sub-discipline of virology. Among the prolific institutions, the publication output of institutions from the USA and Taiwan had higher impact. Citation per Paper (CPP) and Relative Citation Impact (RCI) were more than average for USA. All the Indian institutes listed under prolific institutions had made only a low impact.

TL;DR: It is concluded that facets and semantic factors should be reconsidered as powerful components in KOS development, as well as in Kos representation in the context of the Semantic Web.
Abstract: Knowledge Organization Systems (KOS) can be constructed on the basis of three main kinds of relationships: classical hierarchies; facets; and concepts related in some other relevant way. Among related concepts, of special interest are semantic factors, that is concepts occurring in the definition of a term or class. In an evolutionary perspective, factors can combine, leading to the emergence of a new class of phenomena at a higher integrative level. Recording factors in the schedules of a KOS can make it more sound in ontological terms, and allow for additional functionalities in its application to information retrieval, like query expansion. Some aspects and problems of this are discussed, including of the extent of the semantic network to be considered for each search, and fuzzy relationships with concepts concurring to the definition of terms or classes. Examples are provided from UDC, ILC, and the ISO standard for thesaurus interoperability. It is concluded that facets and semantic factors should be reconsidered as powerful components in KOS development, as well as in KOS representation in the context of the Semantic Web.

Abstract: This paper examines Ranganathan's idea of the universe of knowledge and highlights how his search for a new approach to classification (beyond the enumerative model) was influenced by this idea. It then scrutinizes Ranganathan approach in the light of the cultural background in which it developed. In particular, his PMEST is looked at against the background of the Indian philosophical tradition, comparing it with the Vaisesika categorial systems. Finally, the role of categorial systems as a cognitive means is analyzed. Certain basic categories have surfaced within the Indo-European linguistic and cultural frame in different ages and latitudes. The fact that they are somehow, culturally constructed does not undermine their role of establishing the meaningful domain of discourse of a cultural tradition.

TL;DR: A binary tree is used as a model for a hierarchical structure and the global and local Q-value, being measures for the extent to which a node plays a bridging function between groups, are determined.
Abstract: A binary tree is used as a model for a hierarchical structure. All nodes situated at the same height are assumed to form a group. The global and local Q-value, being measures for the extent to which a node plays a bridging function between groups, are determined. For the global Q-value this is can be done in two ways: a direct one and one via a recursion relation.

TL;DR: Evidence from the Web of Science shows that Ranganathan's legacy is now shown as leading the knowledge organization domain into new territory.
Abstract: Domain analytical studies are used in knowledge organization to comprehend the parameters of specific communities. A fruitful but rarely used approach is to examine the theoretical community that is defined by a common core of cited work. Ranganathan's work, especially on facets, has been shown to populate a primary cluster of influence in author co-citation analyses based on the literature of knowledge organization. The basic research question for this study asks what constitutes the ontological community of citers of Ranganathan over time? Evidence from the Web of Science shows that Ranganathan's legacy is now shown as leading the knowledge organization domain into new territory.

TL;DR: The main focus of this paper will be to look at the ways in which universal classifications, as language independent concept schemes, can assist humans and computers in structuring and presenting information and formulating queries.
Abstract: The pervasive power of digitization causes scientific, educational, economic and cultural communities to change modes of accessing, sharing and disseminating knowledge and leads to a convergence between our cultural heritage, classic culture and technical culture. It is no surprise that some researchers have called for a - digital humanism, pointing out at the force by which new technologies are becoming a sort of culture since they drive us into a new global cultural destiny. Such reflections concern the society as a whole. This paper will examine how knowledge organization meets the growing need to organize digital information. Faceted Classifications will be examined as one of the most adapted knowledge Organization Systems (KOS) for the global information access. One of our objectives will be to understand the reasons underlying its indisputable capacity as a popular tool for global access to information. Thus the main focus of this paper will be to look at the ways in which universal classifications, as language independent concept schemes, can assist humans and computers in structuring and presenting information and formulating queries. We will try through this work to outline some directions for future work and a better understanding of the realm of faceted classification and how its universality is rooted in human cognition.

TL;DR: A survey of academic libraries to know the perception and nature of organizational culture prevailing in these libraries is presented in this paper. But, it is not a comprehensive survey of all libraries.
Abstract: Organizational culture is the moral, social, and behavioural norms of an organization. It creates impacts on the beliefs, attitudes, and priorities of organizational members. It is something holistic, historically determined, socially constructed, soft, and difficult to change. It is something an organization has, but can also be seen as something an organization is. The prevailing culture of an organization, its customs and traditions and in general the day to day happenings are based on the original source of its founder/s and reflect the vision and mission of the institution. The study is based on a survey of academic libraries to know the perception and nature of organizational culture prevailing in these libraries. Study can be used to know the organizations more intimately and for better management.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the findings of a survey of users of the rural public library in Dakshina Kannada district, and found that students and job holders in private/public sector were the regular visitors to the library, who visited the library daily or once a week.
Abstract: The access for the rural population to information sources is very limited. Public library presents various information needs to the society through its services to the community. The present study examines the findings of a survey of users of the rural public library in Dakshina Kannada district. An attempt has been made to understand and evaluate the use of the Bantwal branch public library by the users with respect to their demographic characteristics, frequency and purpose of using the library, and their satisfaction with the resources and services provided in the library. The results of the survey indicate that students and job holders in private/public sector were the regular visitors to the library, who visited the library daily or once a week, hence public libraries need to enrich their information resource collection and create better ambience and basic facilities needed to retain the visitors for longer duration. This study also suggests the transformation of existing libraries or establishing a new set up of dynamic information centres with the help of the latest IT to effectively cater to the information needs of the rural people.

TL;DR: A Spatial Information System (SIS) = GIS is an important data support component of the socio-economic development planning system and discusses what is SIS, what support facilities it can provide, and the categories of users and uses.
Abstract: A Spatial Information System (SIS) = Geographic Information System (GIS) is an important data support component of the socio-economic development planning system. Socio-economic development planning being oriented towards the future, it has to rely on knowledge, as complete as possible, of the attributes of the components of the society the plan covers. The planner needs data / info on all the present aspects of the society and their environment, and of the recent past that created the conditions for development. It implies data on the state and trend in all sectors of economic activity–agriculture, industry, commerce, transportation, business, finance, human resources, etc.; also data / info on and from the supporting infrastructure in all these sectors–the land, fauna, flora, population, housing, nutrition, public health, education, cultural activities, and so on. A range of different categories of data / info constituting components and services – stable and dynamic–from the national , down to the village level - to be used in an integrated manner. Briefly discusses what is SIS, what support facilities it can provide, the categories of users and uses, the components of SIS-thematic cartography, inventorial cartography, different sources of data input, integration of different types of data; the different types of outputs, etc. Several illustrative examples are given.

TL;DR: The theory underlying faceted classification, how and why it has been taken up so widely, and what benefits it brings to the activity of knowledge organization are examined.
Abstract: The Classification Research Group manifesto of 1955, 'Faceted classification as the basis of all information retrieval', has been at least in part achieved, and there is much evidence of faceted classification influencing a whole range of modern information retrieval tools. This paper examines the theory underlying faceted classification, how and why it has been taken up so widely, and what benefits it brings to the activity of knowledge organization. The role of facet analysis as a general research tool is also considered, and how it compares with other content analysis tools as a means of modelling subject domains.

Abstract: This study is based on 5,112 author-assigned 'Associated keywords' culled out from 1,238 research papers selected from eleven different journals of physics published by American Institute of Physics . The research papers from each issue have been chosen by the method of random sampling. All these keywords have been formed from 10,156 single words and/or keywords through 6,718 contextual relationships. The keywords assigned by the respective authors of the concerned articles have only been taken for study, but no keyword was collected from anywhere of any article by either of the Authors of this paper in order to avoid biasness. It has been mathematically established that the formation of 'Associated keywords' from single words and/or keywords depends on contextual relationships exist among different single words and/or keywords. The name given to contextual relationship is 'Alliance potential', and a new parameter has been defined to measure the rate of keyword formation per unit 'Alliance potential'. The name given to this new parameter is 'Associated keyword formation coefficient' or AKFC. This parameter remains constant for a particular journal and varies over different journals. The constancy of AKFC for ten physics journals has been verified and this has been manifested as a characteristic feature of a journal belonging to a specific subject domain.
