A 64-Solenoid, Four-Level Fingertip Search Display for the Blind
TLDR
The design and prototype model of a nonvibrating fingertip search display device that translates a visual image into a contour map of raised pins similar to transitory braille, designed for use in experiments to determine the importance of fingertip exploration in tactile vision substitution.Abstract:
This paper describes the design and prototype model of a nonvibrating fingertip search display device. It was designed for use in experiments to determine the importance of fingertip exploration in tactile vision substitution. An 8 ×8 array of miniature dc solenoids mounted on 5 mm centers forms a raised two-dimensional display. With the aid of an IBM PC, it translates a visual image into a contour map of raised pins similar to transitory braille. The four possible pin heights of 0, 0.33, 0.67, and 1 mm represent discrete levels of image intensity. The user controls the location and resolution of the image sent from the IBM PC to the display by moving a mouse.read more

Haptic feedback for touchpads and other touch control
TL;DR: A haptic feedback planar touch control used to provide input to a computer is described in this article, where the computer can position a cursor in a displayed graphical environment based at least in part on the position signal, or perform a different function.

An experimental system for auditory image representations
TL;DR: Computerized sampling of the system output and subsequent calculation of the approximate inverse (sound-to-image) mapping provided the first convincing experimental evidence for the preservation of visual information in sound representations of complicated images.

Haptic interface for laptop computers and other portable devices
TL;DR: A haptic feedback touch control used to provide input to a computer as discussed by the authors is a touch input device that includes a planar touch surface that provides position information to the computer based on the location of user contact.

Tactile feedback man-machine interface device
Marc R Tremblay,Mark Yim +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, a man-machine interface which provides tactile feedback to various sensing body parts is described, where each unit comprises a mass and a mass-moving actuator, and the entire vibrotactile unit vibrates.

Haptic feedback for button and scrolling action simulation in touch input devices
TL;DR: In this paper, a planar touch control is used to provide input to a computer and haptic feedback is provided by actuators coupled to the touch input device and outputs a force to provide a haptic sensation to the user via the touch surface.
