Abstract
A novel chain coding approach is proposed for real-time recognition of isolated on-line handwritten English characters. A new type of generalized chain code (GCC) is proposed for lossless encoding of the variably-spaced handwritten data points produced naturally by an electronic writing tablet due to the fixed sampling rate and the variable writing speed. Distinctive features for each character are then extracted based on the segmented cumulative differential normalized GCC values and structural descriptors. Experiments showed successful real-time recognition of isolated on-line handwritten lowercase English characters on a 486 class PC.

Adaptive methods for on-line recognition of isolated handwritten characters

V. Vuori
TL;DR: This work introduces several adaptation strategies which add new writer-dependent prototypes into the initial writer-independent prototype set, reshape the existing prototypes with a Learning Vector Quantization (LVQ)-based algorithm, and inactivate poorly performing prototypes.

Dynamic handwriting verification, handwriting-based user authentication, handwriting data generation, and handwriting data preservation

TL;DR: In this paper, a handwriting verification method comprises obtaining a handwriting test sample containing a plurality of available parameters, extracting geometric parameters, deriving geometric features comprising an xposition value and a y-position value for each of the feature points in the test sample, performing feature matching between geometric features of the test samples and a reference sample, determining a handwritten verification result based at least in part on the feature matching, and outputting the handwriting verification result.

Analysis of the Precision of Generalized Chain Codes for the Representation of Planar Curves

TL;DR: To achieve a desired level of precision for the representation of a line drawing, only the size of the grid need be determined; the form of the code can be chosen on the basis of other criteria, such as compactness, smoothness, or relative ease of encoding and processing.
