A New Species for a Bromeliad Phytotelm-Dwelling Tanytarsus (Diptera: Chironomidae)
TLDR
The first species of Tanytarsus Kieffer from a phytotelm (plant-held water) is described as a larva, pupa, and adults from specimens reared from leaf axils of Guzmania (Bromeliaceae), a bromeliad from Puerto Rico.Abstract:
The first species of Tanytarsus Kieffer (Diptera: Chironomidae: Tanytarsini) from a phytotelm (plant-held water) is described as a larva, pupa, and adults from specimens reared from leaf axils of Guzmania (Bromeliaceae), a bromeliad from Puerto Rico. Unreared larval records from Tillandsia bromeliads from Florida seem to belong to the new species. The diversity of Chironomidae from phytotelmata is reviewed, and the existence of a further species of Monopelopia Kieffer (Tanypodinae) is reported.read more

Potential Biodiversity Loss in Florida Bromeliad Phytotelmata due to Metamasius callizona (Coleoptera: Dryophthoridae), an Invasive Species
J. H. Frank,D. Fish +1 more
TL;DR: An annotated list of the aquatic invertebrates inhabiting water impounded in the leaf axils of Florida’s native epiphytic bromeliads is provided and it is suggested that five of the native species and perhaps all of the undescribed species are precinctive (“endemic”).

Molecular phylogeny and temporal diversification of Tanytarsus van der Wulp (Diptera: Chironomidae) support generic synonymies, a new classification and centre of origin
TL;DR: The phylogeny of Tanytarsus sensu lato is reconstructed based on the combined analysis of five nuclear markers, including both ribosomal (18S) and protein‐coding (AATS1, CAD, PGD and TPI) genes, and the monophyly of some established species groups is well supported, while other groups are refuted or remain uncertain.

Chironomid larvae inhabiting bromeliad phytotelmata in a fragment of the Atlantic Rainforest in Rio de Janeiro State
TL;DR: There was a positive relationship between the chironomid abundance and both precipitation and the volume of water in the phytotelmata, and apparently there is no preference by the Chironomids regarding the colonistion of the bromeliad species.

The Bromeliad Microcosm and the Assessment of Faunal Diversity in a Neotropical Forest1
TL;DR: Diversity within bromeliad microcosms at different elevations supported known relationships between diversity, productivity, and habitat complexity along gradients and was not related to differences in the total b romeliad habitat available for colonization.

An ecological study of water-filled tree-holes and their position in the woodland ecosystem.
TL;DR: The subject was taken up by Thienemann, and, in 1934, he published a paper on the fauna of various tropical phytotelmata contrasting it with that known from similar water-bodies in the temperate zone.

FOOD WEBS IN PHYTOTELMATA: “Bottom-Up” and “Top-Down” Explanations for Community Structure
TL;DR: Phytotelmata represent nearly ideal natural instruments for further study of food web dynamics, and exciting opportunities exist for the development and testing of community theories through their manipulation.
