TLDR
In this article, the feasibility of using the ultrafiltration combined with reverse osmosis to desalt sea water in Bohai Bay over four-month pilot running was proved.Abstract:
The paper proves the feasibility of using the ultrafiltration combined with reverse osmosis to desalt sea water in Bohai Bay over four-month pilot running. The results show that the influent quality is not influenced by the UF effluent quality and the optimum operational parameters are the flux 62.5 L/m2·h, the quality of UF permeate was excellent, with turbidity measured below 0.13 NTU and 94% of the SDI15 below 3.0. The ultrafiltration membrane could feed water into the reverse osmosis systems sequentially and steadily, and the salt rejection of reverse osmosis membrane was above 99.1% and stable during the experimental time. Therefore, this method can be used to provide clean materials for multipurpose development of the seawater due to being simple process and low-cost investment.read more

Combined microfiltration or ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis processes
TL;DR: In this article, a water treatment system combines a microfiltration or ultrafiltration membrane system with a downstream reverse osmosis membrane system, and a common permeate pump discharges directly into the inlet of an RO feed pump.

Progress in membrane science and technology for seawater desalination — a review
TL;DR: In this paper, a review of the history of the development of membranes and membrane processes for water production in general and seawater desalination in particular is presented, highlighting some new trends observable in the following four areas; membrane development, membrane characterization, membrane transport and membrane system design.
Membrane separation technology
TL;DR: Membrane separations of interest here are not to be confused with barrier separations employed in the uranium enrichment plant at Oak Ridge, Tennessee as discussed by the authors, where isotopes of uranium hexafluoride were separated by the free-molecular or Knudsen flow of the gas mixture through the pores and orifices created within a porous nickel media which was sometimes referred as a membrane.
