Patients with primary osteoarthritis of the hip and knee were interviewed to determine the dimensionality of their discomfort and disability and to define the clinical importance of each component item, finding their clinical importance was similar both within as well as across dimensions.Abstract:
Current methods of clinical assessment in osteoarthritis show a high degree of variability. By contrast, patients with rheumatoid arthritis may be evaluated using a number of standardised and validated indices. One hundred patients with primary osteoarthritis of the hip and knee were interviewed in order to determine the dimensionality of their discomfort and disability and to define the clinical importance of each component item. The symptomatology of osteoarthritis was captured by five pain, one stiffness, twenty-two physical, eight social and eleven emotional items. In spite of a high degree of variability in the frequency of involvement of the individual items, their clinical importance was similar both within as well as across dimensions. Further studies are indicated to determine the reliability, validity and responsiveness of each of the items identified as a prelude to developing a standardized method of assessing patients with osteoarthritis of the hip and knee.read more

Smallest detectable and minimal clinically important differences of rehabilitation intervention with their implications for required sample sizes using WOMAC and SF-36 quality of life measurement instruments in patients with osteoarthritis of the lower extremities.
TL;DR: In rehabilitation intervention, effects larger than 12% of baseline score (6% of maximal score) can be attained and detected as MCID by the transition method in both the WOMAC and the SF-36.

Development of a Patient-Reported Measure of Function of the Knee*
TL;DR: The results suggest that the Activities of Daily Living Scale is a reliable, valid, and responsive instrument for the assessment of functional limitations that result from a wide variety of pathological disorders and impairments of the knee.

The "forgotten joint" as the ultimate goal in joint arthroplasty: validation of a new patient-reported outcome measure.
TL;DR: The goal of the present study was to develop and validate a new score ("Forgotten Joint Score," or FJS) introducing a new aspect of patient-reported outcome: the patient's ability to forget the artificial joint in everyday life.

A comparison of different indices of responsiveness

TL;DR: Although the disease-specific scales were generally rated as the most responsive scales, the different indices provided different rank orderings by up to 5 levels (p = 0.04), consistent with a priori hypotheses confirming construct validity of the scales.

Measurement of patient outcome in arthritis.
TL;DR: A structure for representation of patient outcome is presented, together with a method for outcome measurement and validation of the technique in rheumatoid arthritis, and these techniques appear extremely useful for evaluation of long term outcome of patients with rheumatic diseases.
