As a quality control measure particularly within the context of a union database like OCLC, cataloging revision can eliminate many errors which might otherwise be input. Based on this revision process, a sratistical method for evaluating the quality of a cataloger's work was developed. The rationale, method of scoring, and establishment of a standard are discussed.

A Quantitative Method for Evaluating the Quality of Cataloging

A Survey of the Literature on Subject Analysis for 1984-85.

For decades, the issue of quality control in cataloging records has been discussed, in particular in bibliographic control in the shared databases for various languages, but no earlier studies assess the quality of Korean cataloging records in the databases. This study examines the quality of Korean cataloging records in OCLC's WorldCat by evaluating records in terms of specific errors, error frequency, areas where errors occur frequently, and errors that could inhibit record retrieval. The results of the current study also are compared with the results of the study of the quality of Chinese-language cataloging records in order to identify shared error patterns. Similarities were found in the error rates and error types. Based on the results, the author proposes some recommendations on how to maintain quality in cataloging Korean-language records.

Quality of Korean Cataloging Records in Shared Databases

This study intends to analyze the meanings and values of shared cataloging in public libraries. Emphasis was on verifying how useful KOLIS-NET is as a tool in order to share bibliographic data and library resources. To the end. this study investigates the recognition and participation of KOLIS-NET in public libraries. Finally suggested is strategies to improve both the poor quality and the poor services. The data needed for discussion were collected by an in-depth interviews with catalogers and a survey with 216 public libraries.
