TLDR
A new conjugate-gradient algorithm which minimizes a function of n variables is given, and based on these experiments, the new algorithm appears to be more robust than Powell's, Fletcher-Powell's, and Jacobson-Oksman's methods, faster than Rosenbrock's method, and especially effective on high dimensional problems.

The design of controllers for the multivariable robust servomechanism problem using parameter optimization methods

TL;DR: The problem of designing realistic multivariable controllers to solve the servomechanism problem is considered and the controllers obtained have been highly competitive (i.e. always superior) with controllers obtained by alternate design methods.
Journal ArticleDOI

Conic Approximations and Collinear Scalings for Optimizers

TL;DR: A generalization from quadratic to conic approximations, defined as ratios of quadratics whose denominators are squares, can better match the values and gradients of typical objective functions, and hence give better estimates for their minimizers.

The optimal decentralized control of a large power system: Load and frequency control

TL;DR: The load and frequency control of a three-area interconnected power system consisting of 9 synchronous machines and a minimum order robust decentralized controller which solves this problem, and also the general multi-area load and Frequency control problem, is obtained.
Journal ArticleDOI

Paper: Sequential stability and optimization of large scale decentralized systems

TL;DR: The notion of sequential stability in the synthesis of decentralized control for large scale systems is introduced in this paper and applications are made to the synthesisation of centralized multivariable controllers and to the decentralized robust control of unknown systems.

An algorithm for the optimal design of passive vibration controllers for flexible systems

TL;DR: In this paper, a gradient algorithm is developed for the optimal design of discrete passive dampers in the vibration control of a class of flexible (distributed parameter) systems, which systematically seeks to make the modal damping and natural frequencies of the system reach a set of preassigned values.

A Rapidly Convergent Descent Method for Minimization

TL;DR: A number of theorems are proved to show that it always converges and that it converges rapidly, and this method has been used to solve a system of one hundred non-linear simultaneous equations.

Algorithms for Minimization Without Derivatives

TL;DR: In this paper, a monograph describes and analyzes some practical methods for finding approximate zeros and minima of functions, and some of these methods can be used to find approximate minima as well.

Function Minimization Without Evaluating Derivatives—a Review

TL;DR: The problem of minimizing a function/(x) of n variables x = (xu x2, • • • xn) from a given approximation to the minimum XQ, has received considerable attention in recent years and two separate problems can be distinguished.
