An assessment of carborane-containing liquid crystals for potential device application
TLDR
Two 4-alkoxyphenyl 12-pentylcarborane-1-carboxylate nematic liquid crystals have been synthesized in this article, which exhibit ideal mixing of nematic phases in their binary mixtures with analogous bicyclo[2.2] octane derivatives and with the polar nematogen 4-(4-isothiocyanatophenyl)-1-(trans-hexyl)cyclohexane.Abstract:
Two 4-alkoxyphenyl 12-pentylcarborane-1-carboxylate nematic liquid crystals have been synthesized. The materials are found to exhibit ideal mixing of nematic phases in their binary mixtures with analogous bicyclo[2.2.2]octane derivatives and with the polar nematogen 4-(4-isothiocyanatophenyl)-1-(trans-hexyl)cyclohexane. The smectic phases for the bicyclo[2.2.2]octanes are destabilized by addition of the carborane derivative. For carborane compound 5BC5 the extrapolated dielectric anisotropy and measured optical anisotropy are 1.3 and 0.057 respectively at 20°C. The refractive indices have been correlated with the calculated electronic polarizabilities and the low birefringence measured for 5BC5 can, at least in part, be attributed to the carborane cylindrical symmetry.read more

TL;DR: In this paper, a class of liquid-crystalline lanthanide-containing liquid crystals has been discovered. But the coordination geometries of the metal ion in f-block metallomesogens differ from those of the d block metallomeogens, in the sense that the coordination number of the lanthanides is high (typically eight or nine).

Organic derivatives of closo-boranes: a new class of liquid crystal materials
TL;DR: In this article, the effects of both steric and electronic influences on the liquid crystal behavior of boron mesogens have been investigated, and the results showed that nematic phases are favored over smectic phases due to the steric effect of the mesogens.

TL;DR: Four families of three-coordinate complexes of stoichiometry have been studied in order to analyze the influence of the closo- or nido-nature of the diphosphine, the monophosphine coordinated to gold and the substituent at the dphosphine on the luminescence of the complexes.

A method for estimating both the solubility parameters and molar volumes of liquids
TL;DR: In this paper, an indirect method of estimating the solubility parameter of high molecular weight polymers is proposed, which is based on group additive constants, but is believed to be superior to Small's method for two reasons: (1) the contribution of a much larger number of functional groups have been evaluated, and (2) the method requires only a knowledge of structural formula of the compound.
