Reinfusion of Shed Blood after Orthopaedic Procedures in Children and Adolescents
TL;DR: The reinfusion of unwashed, filtered shed blood that was as much as 15 per cent of the total blood volume proved to be a safe technique after major orthopaedic procedures.
Journal ArticleDOI
Limitations of blood conservation.

TL;DR: The hemodynamic and myocardial metabolic responses to normovolemic hemodilution were assessed in a prospective randomized trial and blood bank requirements were less in the crystalloid group than in the colloid group.
Journal ArticleDOI
Intraoperative Autologous Transfusion
TL;DR: Concerns about use of autologous transfusion in patients who have an infection or a malignant lesion persist, but hematologic aberrations are related to massive transfusions and should not be considered a contraindication to the general use of Autologous blood.
Journal ArticleDOI
Routine Use of Autotransfusion Following Cardiac Surgery: Experience in 700 Patients
Hartzell V. Schaff,Jerome Hauer,Timothy J. Gardner,James S. Donahoo,Levi Watkins,Vincent L. Gott,Robert K. Brawley +6 more
TL;DR: In contrast to perioperative autotransfusion techniques, collection and reinfusion of shed mediastinal blood is particularly useful for intravascular volume replacement in patients with serious postoperative bleeding.
Journal ArticleDOI
Bacteriologic and endotoxin analysis of salvaged blood used in autologous transfusions during cardiac operations.
Lee A. Bland,Margarita E. Villarino,Matthew J. Arduino,Sigrid K. McAllister,Steven M. Gordon,Charles T. Uyeda,Carol Valdon,Diana Potts,William R. Jarvis,Martin S. Favero +9 more
TL;DR: Although blood collected in the Cell Saver System and used for reinfusion during heart operations often was contaminated with gram-positive bacterial commensals of the skin and low concentrations of endotoxin, no adverse effects were noted in the patients.
