Breaking alias chains in fractional factorials

TLDR
In this article, a method called semifolding is presented for choosing the points in the second experiment, in which the main effects are clean and the interactions are aliased in chains, then, having analyzed the initial experiment, they plan further runs to isolate certain interactions by breaking the chains.
Abstract
Some experimenters carry out their investigation in stages. They begin with an initial 2n-p fraction of resolution IV, in which the main effects are clean and the interactions are aliased in chains, Then, having analyzed the initial experiment, they plan further runs to isolate certain interactions by breaking the chains. In this paper a method called semifolding, for choosing the points in the second experiment, is presented.

De-aliasing effects using semifoldover techniques

Follow-Up Designs to Resolve Confounding in Split-Plot Experiments

TL;DR: The results of fractional-factorial split-plot experiments can be ambiguous and require follow-up experiments to separate effects of potential interest by breaking their alias links with the alias links as mentioned in this paper.

Optimal Foldovers and Semifolding for Minimum Aberration Even Fractional Factorial Designs

TL;DR: In this paper, another fraction was added to a resolution IV design containing close to 50% of the number of factors in a fractional factorial factorial experiment with many factors, and the results may not be conclusive and the addition of another fraction is often recommended.

Sequences of Fractional Replicates in the 2 p–q Series

TL;DR: In this paper, the confounding of effects and of interactions in experiments in the 2 p − q series is usually resolved by doing other fractions of the same size as the first one.
