Chemical Races Within the Genus Mentha L.
S. Kokkini
- Iss: 12, pp 63-78
TLDR
The genus Mentha belongs to the family Lamiaceae; it occurs in all five continents, although its native occurrence in the New World is restricted to a single species in the North.Abstract:
The genus Mentha belongs to the family Lamiaceae; it occurs in all five continents, although its native occurrence in the New World is restricted to a single species in the North. It is infrequent in the Tropics, and in Australia there are a number of species, with unclear relationships to the rest of the genus. Although the genus consists of approximately 25 species and rather fewer hybrids, one can find more than 900 binomials listed in the Index Kewensis.read more

Essential oils of spearmint (Carvone-rich) plants from the island of Crete (Greece)
TL;DR: The qualitative and quantitative analyses of the essential oil content and composition of three spearmint taxa, Mentha longifolia, M. spicata and M. x villoso-nervata, found in scattered localities along the island of Crete are studied have shown that in all cases they are characterised by a high quantity of carvone/dihydrocarvone as well as their related alcohols and esters.

Essential Oils of Mentha Species from Northern Turkey
TL;DR: Out of 8 species and 15 taxa (including hybrids) of Mentha existing in the flora of Turkey, 8 taxa belonging to 6 species were investigated for essential oils, and chemotypic variations based on the results of essential oil analysis, soil analysis and chromosome counts are discussed.

TL;DR: Results have showed that ultrasonically assisted extraction in combination with under vacuum distillation have provided extracts with higher flavouring strength due to the increased concentration of desirable oxygenated compounds compared with hydrodistillation.

Biochemical and Histochemical Localization of Monoterpene Biosynthesis in the Glandular Trichomes of Spearmint (Mentha spicata)
TL;DR: Results demonstrate that carvone biosynthesis takes place exclusively in the glandular trichomes in which this natural product accumulates, and indicates that carveol dehydrogenase probably utilizes carveol only as an adventitious substrate.

Environmental Effects on Peppermint (Mentha piperita L.). I. Effect of Daylength, Photon Flux Density, Night Temperature and Day Temperature on the Yield and Composition of Peppermint Oil
TL;DR: Daylength, night temperature, day temperature and photon flux density were important interacting factors determining oil composition and the photosynthate model does not explain the effect of environmental factors on several other monoterpenes.
