Studies of unexcited and excited elliptic jets reveal their characteristics to be noticeably different from circular jets, suggesting applications of excited elliptic jets for enhanced mixing and chemical reaction, and control of aerodynamic noise. The near‐field turbulence characteristics, jet spread, and locations of switching of major and minor axes of the jet cross section can be drastically altered by forcing. Journal ArticleDOI
Flow control with noncircular jets
TL;DR: Noncircular jets have been identified as an efficient technique of passive flow control that allows significant improvements of performance in various practical systems at a relatively low cost because noncircular jet rely solely on changes in the geometry of the nozzle as discussed by the authors.

Vortex induction and mass entrainment in a small-aspect-ratio elliptic jet
Chih-Ming Ho,Ephraim Gutmark +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, a passive technique of increasing entrainment was found by using a small-aspect-ratio elliptic jet, which was several times greater than that of a circular jet or a plane jet.

Elliptic jets. I - Characteristics of unexcited and excited jets
Fazle Hussain,Hyder S. Husain +1 more
TL;DR: Experimental studies of incompressible elliptic jets of different aspect ratios and initial conditions are summarized along with the effects of excitations at selected frequencies and amplitudes in this paper, where the experimental facilities and procedures are described and jet spread and decay are discussed.

Bifurcating and blooming jets
TL;DR: In this paper, it is shown that different discharge conditions at the jet nozzle exit can give rise to very different far-field flows, such as bifurcating and blooming jets.

Dynamics of coherent structures and transition to turbulence in free square jets
TL;DR: In this article, the authors report results of time-dependent numerical simulation of spatially developing free square jets initialized with a thin square vortex sheet with slightly rounded corner-regions, focusing on the near field of jets with Mach number 03-06 and moderately high Reynolds numbers.
