On the precursors to the 2011 Tohoku earthquake: crustal movements and electromagnetic signatures
TL;DR: In this paper, the precursory behaviour of crustal movements with electromagnetic signatures for the 2011 off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku earthquake was compared with the electromagnetic signatures of pre-seismic precursors, including short-term subionospheric very low frequency (VLF)/LF propagation anomaly, ultralow frequency (ULF) magnetic field depression and ULF/extremely low frequency atmospheric radiation.

The Ionospheric Precursor to the 2011 March 11 Earthquake Based upon Observations Obtained from the Japan-Pacific Subionospheric VLF/LF Network
Masashi Hayakawa,Yasuhide Hobara,Alexander Rozhnoi,Maria Solovieva,Kenji Ohta,Jun Izutsu,T. Nakamura,Y. Kasahara +7 more
TL;DR: By using network observation of subionospheric VLF/LF signals in Japan and in Russia, a significant ionospheric perturbation prior to the recent 2011 March 11 Japan earthquake (EQ) which occurred at sea proximate to the Tohoku area on the main island of Japan was an exceptionally huge plate-type EQ as discussed by the authors.
Journal ArticleDOI
The study of ionospheric anomalies in Japan area during 1998–2010 by Kon et al.: An inaccurate claim of earthquake-related signatures?
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors cast doubts on the possibility that the TEC disturbances were caused by seismic events suggesting that these TEC changes could be induced by normal variations of the global geomagnetic activity.
Journal ArticleDOI
The ultra-low-frequency magnetic disturbances associated with earthquakes
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors reviewed previous convincing evidence on the presence of ULF emissions before three major earthquakes and presented several signal processings to identify the seismogenic emissions by showing latest results for recent large EQs.

Interpretation in terms of gyrotropic waves of Schumann-resonance-like line emissions observed at Nakatsugawa in possible association with nearby Japanese earthquakes
Masashi Hayakawa,Kenji Ohta,Valery Sorokin,A.K. Yaschenko,Jun Izutsu,Yasuhide Hobara,Alexander P. Nickolaenko +6 more
TL;DR: In this article, an interpretation of anomalous Schumann resonance (SR) phenomena in terms of excitation of gyrotropic waves due to input wave from below with a band from 15 to 20 Hz as an exciter was proposed.

Estimation of the size of earthquake preparation zones
TL;DR: In this article, an approximate solution of the problem for a soft elastic inclusion in an elastic half-space is presented. But the authors assume that the moduli of the inclusion differ slightly from those of the surrounding medium (by no more than 30%).

Ionospheric precursors of earthquakes
Sergey Pulinets,K. A. Boyarchuk +1 more
TL;DR: The basic components of Seismo-Ionospheric coupling are discussed in this article, as seen from the ground and from space, as well as from the Troposphere and the Earth's magnetic field.

Low‐frequency magnetic field measurements near the epicenter of the Ms 7.1 Loma Prieta Earthquake
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors report the results of measurements of low frequency magnetic noise by two independent monitoring systems prior to the occurrence of the M{sub s} 7.1 Loma Prieta earthquake of 17 October 1989.

Lithosphere-Atmosphere-Ionosphere Coupling (LAIC) Model - An Unified Concept for Earthquake Precursors Validation
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a multidisciplinary approach to the problem of clarification the nature of short-term earthquake precursors observed in atmosphere, atmospheric electricity and in ionosphere and magnetosphere.
