Green building standards like the Living Building Challenge promote the construction of net-zero energy buildings. In order to meet these standards, alternative heating and cooling methods become necessary, especially for designs with high glazing percentages in temperate climates, such as for aesthetic purposes or use in greenhouses. The design and analysis of a low-cost heating and cooling system is being investigated to address these scenarios. Air-source heat pumps are now commonly used in super-insulated, net-zero energy building designs, and we explore the possibility of augmenting this configuration with an inexpensive seasonal thermal energy store to address the increased heating and cooling loads. A high-glazing building scenario was modeled in Revit to establish monthly loads for a proposed building design, and a heat transfer model of a thermal store coupled to a heat pump was simulated in COMSOL Multiphysics to test feasibility of this idea. The results suggest this strategy has potential but may be limited in application due to its large size. Bioclimatic Interventions for Reducing Cooling Energy Demand in Hot and Humid Climates

This thesis is basically concerned with improving the environment in which office workers go about their business. In the first chapter The office environment the extent of the problem and the neccessity for improving the environment is discussed. Deep-plan buildings and associated interior layouts like the "bull-pen" and open planning are defined. Chapter 2 Daylighting deals with issues relating to the incorporation of daylighting into buildings. Here, the advantages of daylighting both in quantitative measurements as well as qualitative aspects are put forward; and the implications on interior planning discussed. Chapter 3 The courtyard array brings together the ideas of the preceeding chapters and proposes a broad, low building with multiple atria as a solution to the problem of daylighting the deep-plan office. Earlier studies dealing with illumination, thermal comfort, view content, acoustics and economic evaluation are discussed in relation to the proposed array. A discussion on the importance of physical scale models in the evaluation of a building's lighting performance is at the beginning of Chapter 4: Daylighting models. This chapter continues with a description of the models made; and ends with tables of illumination measurements and daylight factor calculations from the physical models. These measurements show the validity of the daylit array concept for daylighting a deep-plan building. In Chapter 5 Economic evaluation the thermal performances of a non-daylit and a daylit building are compared, using the computer program Solar 5. The operating costs of the two alternatives show the extent of potential savings from the use of daylighting. The concluding chapter of this thesis puts in perspective issues relating to the daylighting of deep-plan offices. It discusses the economic trade-offs inherent in the design of a different type of building form. The final question whether the non-daylit module or the daylit module will be built can only be decided by the management of the office. The daylit array : strategies for daylighting the deep-plan office

This chapter firstly looks back in retrospect at the brief history and precedents of high-rise urbanism and then reviews the contemporary development of high-rise urbanism in Asian megacities by a comparison in economic, social, and environmental aspects of three Asian megacities, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Shanghai. The comparative study, with respect to climate, geography/topography, demography, urban governance and policy, etc., reveals that, while the new town system featuring high-rise high-density neighborhood and public transit-oriented development, as adopted by Singapore and Hong Kong, has effectively responded to the critical challenges such as land restriction in the progression of urbanization and evolved toward sustainable compact urban forms, the city of Shanghai seems to be influenced by the new urbanism movement mostly found in North American cities. With largely unsatisfactory government support in urban public service infrastructure and land-use planning for compact development, the intended city center redevelopment and suburbanization (the One City and Nine Towns scheme) seem to have led toward urban sprawling and deteriorating urban environment. The comparison indicates a more compact high-rise urban form may better support environmental sustainable development of Shanghai, and an integrated climate-responsive planning and design workflow are to be developed, and better inter- and cross-disciplinary communication is needed between urban climatology and urban design. For that, a framework is proposed for microclimate research and design integration for high-rise urbanism, and the parametrization of urban form on microclimate at three scales is listed for the followed case studies in Part Two.
