Diminutions of acceleration and deceleration output during professional football match play

TLDR
Time-dependent reductions in distances covered suggest that acceleration and deceleration capability are acutely compromised during match play and may be supported by the findings that HACC and HDEC performance following PEAK was approximately 10% lower than mean values.

Interpreting physical performance in professional soccer match-play: should we be more pragmatic in our approach?

TL;DR: It is suggested that a more pragmatic approach to interpreting the current body of time–motion analysis data and its application in the practical setting is nevertheless required and gaps in the current literature and directions for future research are identified.

Activity Demands During Multi-Directional Team Sports: A Systematic Review

TL;DR: Considerable variability exists in the demands of straight-line running and multi-directional demands across sports, competition levels, and sexes, indicating the need for sports medicine clinicians to design future rehabilitation programs with improved specificity to these demands.

Acute and Residual Soccer Match-Related Fatigue: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

TL;DR: A systematic review of match simulation protocols and actual match-play shows that a period of 72 h post-match play is not long enough to completely restore homeostatic balance and the extent of the recovery period post-soccer game cannot consist of a ‘one size fits all approach’.

The acceleration dependent validity and reliability of 10 Hz GPS.

TL;DR: The validity and reliability of 10Hz GPS for the measurement of instantaneous velocity has been shown to be inversely related to acceleration, and those using 10 Hz GPS should be aware that during accelerations of over 4 ms(-2), accuracy is compromised.

Estimated metabolic and mechanical demands during different small-sided games in elite soccer players.

TL;DR: The main findings were that the total distance, distances run at high speed as well as absolute maximum velocity, maximum acceleration and maximum deceleration increased with pitch size and predicted energy cost, average metabolic power and distance covered at every metabolic power categories were higher in SSG-P compared toSSG-G and in big than in small pitch areas.

Match performance of high-standard soccer players with special reference to development of fatigue

TL;DR: Top-class soccer players performed more high-intensity running during a game and were better at the Yo-Yo test than moderate professional players; fatigue occurred towards the end of matches as well as temporarily during the game, independently of competitive standard and of team position; defenders covered a shorter distance in high- intensity running than players in other playing positions.

Physiology of Soccer: An Update

TL;DR: An update on the physiology of soccer players and referees, and relevant physiological tests is provided, and examples of effective strength- and endurance-training programmes to improve on-field performance are given.

Performance Characteristics According to Playing Position in Elite Soccer

TL;DR: The paper provides a detailed description of the demands placed on elite soccer players, according to their positional role at different work intensities, which may be helpful in the development of individualized training programs.

High-intensity running in English FA Premier League soccer matches

TL;DR: The results suggest that high-intensity running with and without ball possession is reduced during various phases of elite-standard soccer matches and the activity profiles and fatigue patterns vary among playing positions.

Variation in top level soccer match performance.

TL;DR: The main finding was that TD, HIR and VHIR were greater at the end of the season compared to Best opponent teams compared to Worst opponent teams, which may be used to interpret meaningful changes in match performance in top level soccer.
