In this article, the authors deal with discrete optimization of elastic trusses with geometrical nonlinear behavior and constraints on stability and find the optimal member distribution so that the external load does not cause a loss of stability of the structure.
Abstract
The paper deals with discrete optimization of elastic trusses with geometrical nonlinear behaviour and constraints on stability. The problem consists of minimizing the weight and determining the optimal member distribution so that the external load does not cause a loss of stability of the structure. Member cross-sections are selected from a catalogue of available sections. Element stresses, elment stability and global structural stability constraints are considered. A controlled enumeration method according to the increasing value of the objective function is applied. Shallow space trusses are numerically analysed.

Truss optimization with discrete design variables: a critical review

TL;DR: This review presents developed models, theory, and numerical methods for structural optimization of trusses with discrete design variables in the period 1968 – 2014 and collects, for the first time, the articles in the field presenting deterministic optimization methods and meta heuristics.

Modeling of global and local stability in optimization of truss-like structures using frame elements

TL;DR: In this paper, an approach to take into account global and local stability in the design optimization of truss-like structures is presented, based on the use of frame elements and a single global stability constraint.

Optimum design with imperfection sensitivity coefficients for limit point loads

TL;DR: In this paper, a computational method is presented for finding a sequence of optimum designs of a discrete system which exhibits limit point behavior. But the method is not suitable for large structures, because incremental nonlinear analysis to find the limit point load factor needs to be carried out only once for the structure of trivial initial optimum design.

Guided genetic algorithm for dome optimization against instability with discrete variables

TL;DR: In this paper, the relative gradient of joint well-formedness (Gra_r) is defined to represent the stability of domes from the perspective of Joint Wellformedness, which is suitable for a high-performance optimum algorithm.

Minimum weight design of truss structures with geometric nonlinear behavior

TL;DR: In this article, an optimization method based on optimality criterion for minimum weight design of truss type structures with geometric nonlinear behavior has been presented, where the nonlinear critical load is determined by finding the load level at which the Hessian of the potential energy ceases to be positive definite.

TL;DR: In this article, an optimization algorithm based on an optimality criterion was used to design a minimum weight space truss with different constraint requirements on system stability, and the results obtained for various designs were compared for their imperfection sensitivity.

Optimization of Shallow Trusses Against Limit Point Instability

TL;DR: In this article, a detailed investigation of the question of the uniqueness of the optimum designs for two-and four-bar shallow truss problems is carried out, and the optimized trusses satisfy the constant-strain energy density criteria and the load maximization problem is verified to be the dual of the minimization of the total potential energy.
