Disappearing Dividends, Catering, and Risk

TL;DR: The authors examined the disappearing dividends puzzle through the lens of risk and reported two main findings: (1) Risk is a significant determinant of the propensity to pay dividends and it explains roughly 40% of disappearing dividends, and (2) there is little support for the view that disappearing dividends reflect firms' catering to transient fads for dividends.
