Ecological stability: An information theory viewpoint

TLDR
The stability measure developed in this paper is applied to two example systems and shows the ability of an ecosystem to resist changes in the presence of perturbations.

Journal ArticleDOI

Information theory in ecology.

TL;DR: This work has shed light on the possibility that ecosystem behavior is the most palpable example of a purely natural 'infodynamics' that transcends classical dynamics, but remains well within the realm of quantitative description.

The Seasonal Dynamics of The Chesapeake Bay Ecosystem

TL;DR: The full suite of carbon exchanges among the 36 most important components of the Chesapeake Bay mesohaline ecosystem is estimated to examine the seasonal trends in energy flow and the trophic dynamics of the ecosystem.

Babel, or the ecological stability discussions: an inventory and analysis of terminology and a guide for avoiding confusion.

TL;DR: A strategy is derived that can help to dispel the existing ”confusion of tongues” on the subject of ”stability” and prevent its future recurrence, and consists of three questions that should be kept in mind when communicating about stability properties.

Babel, or the ecological stability discussions: an inventory and analysis

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present an inventory and analysis of dis-cussions of ecological stability, considering 163 defini- tions of 70 different stability concepts, and propose a strategy that can help to dispel the existing "confu- sion of tongues" on the subject of "stability" and prevent its future recurrence.
Journal ArticleDOI

Ecosystem maturity - towards quantification

TL;DR: The maturity ranking shows a strong negative correlation with relative ascendency, and thus a strong positive correlation with system overhead, a possible measure of ecosystem stability, which points to the feasibility of using comparisons of ecosystem models as a tool for enhancing the authors' understanding of ecosystem characteristics, notably sustainability.
