TLDR
Rat skeletal muscle depleted of potassium has a slower rate of restoration when extracellular magnesium is reduced, and concomitant magnesium deficiency may retard restoration of potassium in depleted patients.
Abstract
Rat skeletal muscle depleted of potassium has a slower rate of restoration when extracellular magnesium is reduced. Concomitant magnesium deficiency may retard restoration of potassium in depleted patients if the magnesium deficiency is not simultaneously corrected.

Refractory potassium repletion. A consequence of magnesium deficiency.

TL;DR: Until serum Mg is routinely performed consideration should be given to treating hypokalemic patients with both Mg as well as K to avoid the problem of refractory K repletion due to coexisting Mg deficiency.

The effect of diuretics on lymphocyte magnesium and potassium.

TL;DR: Chronic congestive heart failure patients being treated with the loop-blocking diuretic, furosemide, were found to have significantly reduced lymphocyte magnesium and potassium and potassium values compared to values obtained in 20 control subjects, while amiloride exerted magnesium-sparing actions in addition to its well-established potassium- Sparing actions.

Complications of total parenteral nutrition.

TL;DR: This editorial review is to discuss several interesting and sometimes preventable complications that result from the use of TPN and to point out several situations in which TPN used too enthusiastically might directly result in death.

Effects of Diuretics on the Renal Handling of Magnesium

TL;DR: A dose-response relationship has been established for the effect of amiloride in reducing fractional excretion of magnesium and potassium during frusemide diuresis in rats, and further studies are required to establish the precise mechanism(s) involved in the drug's magnesium-sparing properties.

The effects of amiloride and triamterene on urinary magnesium excretion in conscious saline-loaded rats

TL;DR: The potassium‐sparing diuretics, triamterene and amiloride, reduced urinary magnesium excretion in conscious saline‐loaded rats and urinary magnesium‐conservation was also detected when amILoride was used in combination with the potent ‘loop‐blocking' diuretic, frusemide.

TL;DR: The failure of magnesium-deficient diets to produce changes of magnesium content in the soft tissues contrasts with the marked decreases in muscle potassium produced by potassium deficiency (Heppel, 1939).

The electrolytes of muscle and liver in potassium-depleted rats.

TL;DR: The most striking result of the work reported here lies in the fact that the muscles of animals deprived of potassium take up sodium instead of potassium, a clear-cut example of a condition in which sodium must occur largely as an intracellular cation.
