Effects of simulated increased gravity on the rate of aging of rats: implications for the rate of living theory of aging.

TLDR
Results show that a moderate increase of the level of basal metabolism of young adult rats adapted to hypergravity compared to controls in normal gravity is accompanied by a roughly similar increase in the rate of organ aging and reduction of survival, in agreement with Pearl's rate of living theory of aging, previously experimentally demonstrated only in poikilotherms.

Role of oxidative stress in Drosophila aging.

TL;DR: Transgenic strains of Drosophila melanogaster are generated that synthesize excess levels of enzymatically active superoxide dismutase, a enzyme that catalyzes the dismutation of the superoxide radical to hydrogen peroxide and water, demonstrating that oxidative damage plays a role in governing the lifespan of Dosophila during normal metabolism and under conditions of environmental stress.

Gravitational and space biology at the cellular level

TL;DR: Space biology can be said to have begun in the late 1940s, with the launch of monkey Albert on a U.S. rocket called ‘Blossom 3’ in 1948, before the first manned space flight took place in 1961.

A return to time, cells, systems, and aging: III. Gompertzian models of biological aging and some possible roles for critical elements.

TL;DR: A mathematical model which has Gompertzian-like dynamics is derived which incorporates the deterministic failure of biological components with stochastic aspects of senescence and is used to obtain some of the lifespan curves found in the literature.

Behavioural consequences of hypergravity in developing rats

TL;DR: The results show that hypergravity leads to a retarded development of motor aspects which are mainly dependent upon the vestibular system.

Altered Behaviour in Hamsters Conceived and Born in Hypergravity

TL;DR: It is suggested that the persistent behavioural disturbances are caused by the embryonal development of the hamsters in a hypergravity environment and that hypergravity and rotation each have a different effect on behaviour.

TL;DR: This chapter describes the isolation of liver or kidney mitochondria and the method for testing the quality of mitochondria, with the exception that the mitochondrial pellet need be washed only once.

Mitochondrial role in cell aging

TL;DR: The fine structural and biochemical data support the concept that the mitochondria of fixed postmitotic cells may be the site of intrinsic aging because of the attack by free radicals and lipid peroxides originating in the organelles as a by-product of oxygen reduction during respiration.
