TLDR
In this paper, the authors describe the development of an analytical model for estimation of the number of vehicles in an AGV-based system and test the ability of the model to estimate the vehicle requirements under various conditions.
Abstract
The estimation of the number of vehicles is of paramount importance in AGV-based systems and requires a careful and detailed study, especially when AGVs are selected as the primary material handling system. This paper describes the development of an analytical model for estimation of the number of AGVs. The ability of the model to estimate the vehicle requirements under various conditions have been tested. The results indicate the consistent performance of the model and confirm the utility.

Survey of research in the design and control of automated guided vehicle systems

TL;DR: It is concluded that most models can be applied for design problems at manufacturing centres and new analytical and simulation models need to be developed for large AGV systems to overcome large computation times, NP-completeness, congestion, deadlocks and delays in the system and finite planning horizons.

Design and operational issues in AGV-served manufacturing systems

TL;DR: The objectives of the paper are to unify various lines of research related to AGVs and to suggest directions for future study, as well as identifying the inefficiencies that result from addressing issues in isolation, suggesting the need for integration.

Models for Understanding Flexible Manufacturing Systems

TL;DR: In this article, the basic features of flexible manufacturing systems are reviewed and models for determining the production capacity of such systems are developed, showing the desirability of a balanced work load, the benefit of diversity in job routing if there is adequate control of the release of jobs, and the superiority of common storage for the system over local storage at machines.

Tandem Configurations for Automated Guided Vehicle Systems and the Analysis of Single Vehicle Loops

TL;DR: In this article, the authors developed an analytical model to study the throughput performance of a single vehicle loop, and the resulting expressions are the first closed-form analytical expressions that have been obtained to determine the throughput capacity of single vehicle operating under a specific dispatching rul...

Potentials for bi-directional guide-path for automated guided vehicle based systems

TL;DR: In this article, a model of a bi-directional traffic flow guide-path is presented and the effect of the traffic flow pattern on the shop throughput is demonstrated and compared to that of a uni-irectional flow system of an equivalent facility.
