Intrauterine devices and pelvic inflammatory disease: an international perspective

TL;DR: It is indicated that IUDs should be left in place up to their maximum lifespan and should not routinely be replaced earlier, provided there are no contraindications to continued use and the woman wishes to continue with the device.

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

TL;DR: In this paper, a review summarizes current approaches to diagnosis and treatment and the future prospects for better prevention strategies for pelvic inflammatory disease, which can produce acute symptoms and result in infertility, ectopic pregnancy and chronic pelvic pain.

A long-term follow-up study of women using different methods of contraception--an interim report.

TL;DR: The available evidence does not yet allow a final balance to be struck between the benefits and risks associated with the new methods of contraception that have become widely used during the last two decades, but it seems clear that there are no material risksassociated with the use of the diaphragm apart from the risk of pregnancy and that there may be some unintended benefits.

Intrauterine device and upper-genital-tract infection

TL;DR: Fair evidence indicates no important effect of IUD use on tubal infertility, and contemporary IUDs rival tubal sterilisation in efficacy and are much safer than previously thought.

Incidence, trends, and risks of ectopic pregnancy in a population of women.

L Weström, +2 more
- 03 Jan 1981 -
TL;DR: The increased risk of ectopic pregnancy after salpingitis is confirmed and the increase in the incidence of ectopy pregnancy in Lund from 1960 to 1979 was partly accounted for by the use of IUCDs.

Application of life table techniques to measurement of contraceptive effectiveness.

TL;DR: The Pearl pregnancy rate, which has been traditionally used to measure contraceptive effectiveness, is inadequate because of sample heterogeneity and incomplete histories-the life table method is described that permits one to combine incomplete histories with complete ones for purposes of estimating the proportions of the sample that might have remained protected for specified periods if all members had remained under observation for these periods.

Intra-uterine contraception: recommended procedures for data analysis.

TL;DR: This paper presents "recommended procedures for the computation of net cumulative event and closure rates based on all segments" (for IUD use) as a contribution to comparable data analysis in the field.

Prevention of pregnancy by the Graefenberg ring method; a re-evaluation after 28 years' experience.

TL;DR: All women who wished to become pregnant became so spontaneously without any treatment, generally within one to 4 months and in 2 cases within 6 months, in view of the fact that before that change, in about 5 per cent of the cases, the ring slipped out of place, I would recommend regular examinations in order to discover this.
