TLDR
This paper poses questions concerning reproductive strategies which have evolved among one group of vertebrates (the lizards), and provides quantitative data to answer them, and presents comparable data from birds, the vertebrate group most thoroughly studied in this respect.
Abstract
Several investigators have dealt in a theoretical way with the evolution of reproductive rates and attendant life history phenomena (Cole, 1954; Lack, 1954, 1966, 1968; Murphy, 1968; Svardson, 1949; Williams, 1966a, 1966b). Tinkle (1969a) has applied evolutionary principles in an attempt to construct a general theory of the evolution of single-broodedness and iteroparity, of viviparity, and of clutch size and clutch number in lizards. Most of the data presented by him were qualitative. In this paper we pose a series of questions concerning reproductive strategies which have evolved among one group of vertebrates (the lizards), and provide quantitative data to answer them. We further present comparable data from birds, the vertebrate group most thoroughly studied in this respect. Finally, we suggest the weaknesses in studies of reptilian reproduction in the hope of stimulating future workers to collect data that are essential to answer these specific questions.

Sexual selection and the descent of man, 1871-1971

TL;DR: In the first full discussion of sexual selection since 1871, leading biologists brought modern genetic theory and behavior observation to bear on the subject as mentioned in this paper, and the result is a remarkably original and well-rounded view of the whole concept that will be invaluable especially to students of evolution and human sexual behavior.

The social behaviour of anuran amphibians

TL;DR: Temporal patterns of anuran reproduction fall into two broad categories: prolonged breeding and explosive breeding, and many aspects of vocal behaviour and chorus organization can be viewed as consequences of intrasexual competition.

The Evolution of Life History Traits: A Critique of the Theory and a Review of the Data

TL;DR: Two models which give alternative explanations for the adaptation of life history traits to stable and fluctuating environments are reviewed and tried to understand what life history data could mean in general, given the present state of knowledge.

Reproductive Effort and Terminal Investment in Iteroparous Animals

TL;DR: Though the long-lived birds and mammals are among the most promising organisms on which to test the theory that reproductive effort increases with age, measures of fecundity commonly decline with increasing maternal age, some recent evidence suggests that offspring survival may improve toward the end of the lifespan.

Shortest connection networks and some generalizations

TL;DR: In this paper, the basic problem of interconnecting a given set of terminals with a shortest possible network of direct links is considered, and a set of simple and practical procedures are given for solving this problem both graphically and computationally.
