TLDR
Three displays were evaluated for their effectiveness in overcoming pronunciation problems that typically confront Spanish speakers attempting to learn English.Abstract:
Three displays were evaluated for their effectiveness in overcoming pronunciation problems that typically confront Spanish speakers attempting to learn English. One display shows tongue location and trajectory during vowels; another similar display isolates the vowels in multisyllabic words that should be reduced; the third display shows the amount of aspiration of initial consonants and the time lapse before voicing of the succeeding vowel. Other displays are being developed for teaching a tone language to English speakers.read more

The production of "new" and "similar" phones in a foreign language: evidence for the effect of equivalence classification
TL;DR: This paper found that the phonetic space of adults is restructured during L2 learning, and support the hypothesis that equivalence classification prevents experienced L2 learners from producing similar L2 phones, but not new L 2 phones, authentically.

Imitation of a VOT continuum by native speakers of English and Spanish: evidence for phonetic category formation.
James Emil Flege,Wieke Eefting +1 more
TL;DR: In imitation of a voice onset time (VOT) continuum ranging from/da/to/ta/by by subjects differing in age and/or linguistic experience, the subjects showed abrupt shifts in VOT between two or three VOT response "modes."

Native-language phonotactic constraints affect how well Chinese subjects perceive the word-final English /t/-/d/ contrast
James Emil Flege,Chipin Wang +1 more
TL;DR: This paper found that the Cantonese subjects were significantly more sensitive to the English /t/−/d/ contrast than the Mandarin subjects, with the Shanghainese subjects showing an intermediate level of performance.

Chinese subjects' perception of the word-final English/t/-/d/ contrast: Performance before and after training
TL;DR: Chinese subjects who were native speakers of a language that permits obstruents in word-final position seemed to benefit more from the training than those whose native language (L1) has no word- final obstruent, interpreted to mean that syllable-processing strategies established during L1 acquisition may influence later L2 learning.

Band-pass filters with linear phase
TL;DR: In this article, a set of techniques has been developed which permits the simultaneous realization of flat pass band transmission (±0.15 db experimental) linear phase (to within ±5° experimental) over most (1 - 1/N) of the nominal pass band, where N is the number of "inband" poles.
A nineteen-channel filter bank spectrum analyzer for a speech recognition system
K. N. Stevens,G. Von Bismarck +1 more
TL;DR: Low pass filter, bandpass filter, and design of input system for speech recognition computer was discussed in this paper, where a low pass filter was used for low-frequency speech recognition.
