This paper aims to analyze the perception students have about the meaning of business games in the management learning process. Business games are as useful in the academic environment as they are in the commercial environment, as they offer simulated experience of business situations and associated decision-making. Research that proves the validity of such games as an educational practice able to add knowledge to management training and contribute a meaningful learning experience is still incipient. Thus, this research was undertaken with 72 students from undergraduate and specialization courses in Management and related areas who have taken part in business games. The collected data was analyzed, qualitatively and quantitatively, using the Collective Subject Speech (CSS) method, developed by Lefevre and Lefevre (2003, 2005). What emerged is that the meaning of the business games for the students is related to its contributions to the management learning process. Some factors were identified as the main contributions: (a) the aid in developing decision-making skills, an integral characteristic of management roles; (b) the simulated experience of business activities; (c) the development of interpersonal abilities for teamwork; and (d) the application of knowledge acquired during Management courses.

This paper presents an overview about the use of business simulation and games inundergraduate business programs in Bahia State, Brazil. The increasing interest about thistechnique can be originated, among others facts, on the many benefits that the specializedliterature shows for its users. In this article a theoretical review on this literature is developedsearching its central concepts, its origins and its use in Brazil and in the world. Someempirical data are presented from a survey with 47 under-graduation coordinators anddirectors from Bahian Institutions about their experience with business simulation and gamesby their lectures and professors. A quantitative approach using descriptive statistics(frequency, means and standard deviation) showed that 44.7% of the Bahian Institutions applythis kind of techniques. It shows also that business simulation practices are expected to growin next five years, for 63, 8 % due to high satisfaction indications on its application. Finally,two aspects appeared as very important ones to a higher level of business simulation andgames application in Management courses in Bahia: the acquisition cost and the availabilityof electronic simulations.

Purpose: This paper studies the influence of simulation dynamics in the learning of business games participants. Originality/gap/relevance/implications: Although many studies suggest the influence of factors linked simulation dynamics in the learning of participants of business games, it is unusual to investigate partial and simultaneous influence. Within lots of studies, the purpose is to evaluate the influence of one antecedent factor on learning of participants in business games. To explore possible inter-relationships between independent variables and effects of interaction expands the scope of analysis. Key methodological aspects: It was examined the statements of 90 undergraduate management students of four institutions of higher education in Brazil, by analysis through multiple linear regression model in six variables linked simulation dynamics (professor, manual, team, complexity, debriefing and duration). Summary of key results: Two variables composed the multiple linear regression model (debriefing and duration). These variables obtained a degree of association of 59% with the quantum of learning perceived by the participants of business games and explained 32% of its variation. Key considerations/conclusions: The findings of this study may contribute to elaborate lesson plans with business games describing the influence of factors linked simulation dynamics, many of them under the professor control.
