TLDR
Two strongly acidic, ninhydrin‐negative compounds were found in the water soluble fraction of the orb webs of Argiopes trifasciata and Argiope aurantia, and one is a derivative of taurine.
Abstract
. Two strongly acidic, ninhydrin-negative compounds were found in the water soluble fraction of the orb webs of Argiope trifasciata (Lucas) and Argiope aurantia (Forskal). One of these is a derivative of taurine. Aninhydrin-positive GABA derivative, gabamide, also exists in the water-soluble fraction of the web.

Modulation of the mechanical properties of spider silk by coating with water

TL;DR: The araneus diadetnatus is made up of two types of thread with distinctive mechanical properties: stiff radial threads which sag when contracted by only 10%, and elastic circumferential 'capture' threads which can be contracted to less than 5% of their original length in the web without sagging as discussed by the authors.

Compounds in the droplets of the orb spider's viscid spiral

TL;DR: The chemical composition of this aqueous solution is investigated and the droplets are found to be a concentrated solution of hygroscopic substances related to neurotransmitters.

Comparative study of orb web hygroscopicity and adhesive spiral composition in three araneid spiders

TL;DR: Orb web hygroscopicity was examined in three species of araneid spiders and it appears that organic LMW are more responsible for water adsorption by the adhesive spiral cover than inorgnic LMW.

Spider Nutrition: An Integrative Perspective

TL;DR: There is a tremendous opportunity to rapidly advance the understanding of spider nutrition, given a strong foundation in the natural history, behaviour, physiology and ecology of spiders and recent advances in analytical techniques and frameworks for studying nutrition.

Photometric ninhydrin method for use in the chromatography of amino acids.

TL;DR: In the present investigations of the chromatographic separation of amino acids, it has been observed that, when the color development is carried out in tubes exposed to the air, these difficulties appear to result primarily from the influence of dissolved oxygen.

Microdetermination of Phosphorus

TL;DR: The method described in this paper has the greatest sensitivity, being able to demonstrate the presence of 0.10 μg of phosphorus per ml. It is based on the reduction of phosphomolybdate complex with ascorbic acid, and is essentially identical to the method published by Chen, Toribara and Warner (1956).

Comparative studies of fibroins. II. The crystal structures of various fibroins.

TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that probably all the fibroins are made up of anti-parallel pleated sheets of polypeptide chains, the difference between the fibres produced by the silk-spinning organisms belonging to the orders Lepidoptera and Araneae has been attributed to the variation in, and sequence of, the amino acid residues composing the polyprotein chains.
