The trypanocide berenil was assessed for chemical stability over the pH range 1-8 at 37 degrees C and 0.2 M ionic strength. It was found to be sufficiently unstable under acid conditions that its therapeutic efficacy is most likely severely compromised when administered orally. At pH 3, the half-life was 35 min, decreasing to 1.5 min at pH 1.75. Reaction rate constants were corrected for the effects of buffer catalysis and were found to range from 2.00 min(-1) at pH 1 to 6.1 x 10(-6) min(-1) at pH 8. The pH-rate profile displayed a region (pH 1-4) where specific acid catalysis was dominant, followed by a transitional region (pH 5-7), and finally a region (pH >7) where uncatalysed degradation was most important. It is recommended that berenil be enteric coated for formulations to be used in treating Third World parasitic diseases.

Electrocardiography: A Technologist's Guide to Interpretation.

Ambulatory mental stress monitoring requires long-term physiological measurements. This paper presents a data collection protocol for ambulatory recording of physiological parameters for stress measurement purposes. We present a wearable sensor system for ambulatory recording of ECG, EMG, respiration and skin conductance. The system also records various context parameters: acceleration, temperature and relative humidity. We show that the sensor system is capable of long-term, noninvasive, nonobtrusive, wireless physiological monitoring. We also show some preliminary results of a stress estimation method. These results reveal already a number of context-related issues we will have to take into account in future work. The presented sensor system enables physiological and context data collection and further development of personalized real-time stress detection algorithms.

Towards Ambulatory Mental Stress Measurement from Physiological Parameters

This paper proposes a modeling method for generic compliant robotic manipulators. It is based on graph theory and the port-Hamiltonian formalism, which allows a modular approach to the interconnection of rigid bodies with compliant actuators by means of kinematic pairs. This modularity enables a simple and straight-forward adaption the model when a manipulator's actuator morphology is changed. An example of a spatial three degree-of-freedom manipulator shows that this modeling method is more suitable for modeling changes in actuator placement than the traditional Euler–Lagrange method.
