The application of pattern recognition in the automatic classification of microscopic rock images

TL;DR: The results of the study show that the automatic recognition of the discussed rock types is possible, and reveal that, if the CIELab color space and the nearest neighbor classification method are used, the rock samples in question are classified correctly, with the recognition levels of 99.8%.

Computationally efficient, one-pass algorithm for morphological filters

TL;DR: This paper proposes a new algorithm implementing morphological dilation and erosion of functions, which opens the way to such time-critical applications where the complexity and memory requirements of serial morphological operators represented a bottleneck limiting their usability.

Automatic mineral identification using color tracking

TL;DR: A novel automated color-based mineral identification procedure is developed, which can efficiently incorporate color variations under plane-polarized (PPL) and cross-polarsized (XPL) illumination modes and is effectively superior to multi-feature MI approaches due to its simplicity and ease of application.
