Impairment of Respiration, Ion Accumulation, and Ion Retention in Root Tissue Treated with Ribonuclease and Ethylenediamine Tetraacetic Acid
TLDR
Respiration and ion retention proved to be impaired by exogenous RNase and EDTA was found to produce similar responses, presumably by removal of divalent ions which normally protect polyribonucleotides from endogenous RNase.Abstract:
Ribonuclease has been reported to impair protein synthesis (1, 2), growth (2), and ion accumulation (15, 24) in plant tissue. Oxidative phosphorylation by plant mitochondria is uncoupled by RNase3 (8); however, this enzyme has not been found to affect root respiration (1, 8). The experiments reported here represent a further study of the effects of RNase on respiration and ion accumulation by root tissue. Respiration and ion retention proved to be impaired by exogenous RNase. In addition, EDTA was found to produce similar responses, presumably by removal of divalent ions which normally protect polyribonucleotides from endogenous RNase.read more

TL;DR: Bean plants subjected to a sodium chloride concentratioz about onetenth that of seawater for 1 week suffered no damage if the calcium concentration of the nutrient solution was 1 millimole per liter or higher, but at lower calcium concentrations damage was severe and apparently due to a massive breakthrough of sodium into the leaves.

Effects of ribonuclease on the metabolism of living root-tip cells.
TL;DR: The results show that ribonuclease induces mitotic abnormalities in root-tip cells, shows that the enzyme actually can penetrate into living root-tips and influences the metabolism of nucleic acids, protein and respiration in onion root- tips.
