The paper presents a contribution to the development of a numerical method to assess and classify the consequences of differential settlements on masonry structures. The main objective is to compare different criteria of damage assessment. The work consists to study a masonry wall, using numerical modelling, subjected to a differential settlement with a distinct element method (UDEC). Due to the distinct element method, the displacement requires to impose an optimal numerical velocity during a given period. The influence of vertical displacement on the wall has been studied by analyzing several criteria of damage assessment based on joints behavior in shear or tension. Based on the comparison with threshold values of the admissible differential settlement, the cumulative length of separate joints has been considered to satisfy an adequate criterion. The classification of damage level could be based on this criterion.read more

3D finite element coupled analysis model for geotechnical and complex structural problems of historic masonry structures: conservation of Abu Serga church, Cairo, Egypt
TL;DR: In this article, the authors present the damage mechanism of a historical masonry architecture induced by differential settlement based on 3D FE analysis, and investigate the behavior fully saturated soft clays subjected to self-weight loading from an old masonry structure of Abu Serga church which is the oldest church in Egypt dating back to the fifth century A.D and located in old Cairo area in Cairo city.

Building Response to Excavation‐Induced Settlement
TL;DR: In this article, the authors developed procedures to evaluate the tolerance of brick-bearing wall and small frame structures to ground displacements that develop during opencutting and tunneling, and evaluated the effect of grade beams, building orientation and building location relative to excavation.

Analytical model for the prediction of building deflections induced by ground movements
Oliver Deck,Amresh Singh +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors developed an analytical model that can predict the building-relevant deflections induced by tunnelling or mining subsidence by taking into account soil-structure interactions due to differences in stiffness between the ground and the building.
