Influence of predation on shell morphology of Buccinum undatum L. on Atlantic coast of Canada

TLDR
It is postulate that the increased shell thickness and elongated apertures of the Maces Bay whelks are adaptations to lobster and crab predation at this site, whereas the thinner shells of Kennebecasis Bay and Gulf whelk reflects decreased crustacean predation.

Induced defensive responses by the bivalve Mytilus edulis to predators with different attack modes

L. D. Smith, +1 more
- 28 Apr 2000 -
TL;DR: There may be a trade-off between shell thickness and linear shell growth and a potential delay in attaining a size refuge from predation.
Journal ArticleDOI

Diet, behaviour and reproduction of the whelk Buccinum undatum in the northern Gulf of St. Lawrence, eastern Canada

TL;DR: The use of prey resources and seasonal variations in behaviour and reproduction for the whelk Buccinum undatum, the most abundant subtidal carnivore in the northern Gulf of St. Lawrence, are examined.
Journal ArticleDOI

Distribution, population structure and feeding of subtidal seastars in the northern Gulf of St. Lawrence

TL;DR: Seastar populations in the Mingan Islands, northern Gulf of St. Lawrence, were examined using quantitative sampling by SCUBA and appear to be the dominant predators in the northern Gulf and probably play an important role in determining community structure.
Journal ArticleDOI

Relation between escape behaviour of benthic marine invertebrates and the risk of predation

TL;DR: The hypothesis that the intensity of escape responses increases with the risk of mortality from various predators is examined, for six benthic marine invertebrates with strong escape responses, which generally supports the hypothesis.
Journal ArticleDOI

Crab scars reveal survival advantage of left-handed snails

TL;DR: It is shown for the first time, contrary to traditional wisdom, that rare left-handed coiling promotes survival from attacks by right-handed crabs, and this frequency-dependent result influences the balance of selection processes that maintain left- handedness at the species level.

The Ecology of Intertidal Gastropods

TL;DR: The chapter dwells on the competition and predation due to the distribution and abundance of population of intertidal gastropods, its reproductive biology, and the geographical distribution and influences of gastropod on the structure of interTidal communities.
Journal ArticleDOI

Interoceanic differences in vulnerability of shelled prey to crab predation

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors report that shells of shell-eating gastropods living on intertidal open rocky surfaces exhibit various shell features which can be interpreted as adaptations against such shell-breaking predators as fishes, spiny lobsters, and crabs.
Book ChapterDOI

Ecological studies at Lough Hyne

TL;DR: This chapter reviews on how the distribution of marine organisms in a limited coastal area is determined, how they react with each other and with their inanimate environment, and how their numbers are controlled.
