Coral reefs for coastal protection: A new methodological approach and engineering case study in Grenada.
Borja G. Reguero,Borja G. Reguero,Michael W. Beck,Michael W. Beck,Vera N. Agostini,Philip A. Kramer,Philip A. Kramer,Boze Hancock +7 more
TL;DR: One of the few existing examples available to date of a reef restoration project designed and engineered to deliver risk reduction benefits is presented and shows how engineering and ecology can work together in community-based adaptation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Coral reefs as the first line of defense: Shoreline protection in face of climate change.
TL;DR: The objective of the present review was to compile the main results in the literature regarding the study of shoreline protection delivered by coral reefs, identifying the main threats climate change imposes to the service, and discuss mitigation and recovery strategies that can and have been applied to these ecosystems.
Journal ArticleDOI
Assessing Mozambique's exposure to coastal climate hazards and erosion
Pedro Cabral,Gabriela Augusto,Adeoluwa Akande,Anjos Costa,Anjos Costa,Nelson Amade,Nelson Amade,Sérgio Niquisse,Sérgio Niquisse,Ali Atumane,Ali Atumane,António Cuna,António Cuna,Kiana Kazemi,Ramires Mlucasse,Ramires Mlucasse,Rubini Santha +16 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors calculate an Exposure Index (EI) for the coastline of Mozambique and assess the importance of the natural habitats in reducing exposure to coastal climate hazards.

Financing coastal resilience by combining nature-based risk reduction with insurance
Borja G. Reguero,Borja G. Reguero,Michael W. Beck,Michael W. Beck,David Schmid,Daniel Stadtmüller,Justus Raepple,Stefan Schüssele,Kerstin Pfliegner +8 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors explored a resilience solution that combines risk transfer (e.g., insurance) with risk reduction, which have often been treated as two separate mechanisms for disaster risk management.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ecosystem services and biodiversity trends in Mozambique as a consequence of land cover change
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors estimate past and future changes in multiple ecosystem services and biodiversity, as a consequence of land cover change (LCC) in Mozambique, using a spatially explicit approach.

Status of coral reefs of the world : 2004
TL;DR: The second edition is a major expansion and improvement on the first edition written in 1998 as discussed by the authors, with recommendations for action by national authorities, without the use of scientific jargon, of the status of coral reefs and causes of reef decline.
Journal ArticleDOI
Wave Transformation Over Salt Marshes: A Field and Numerical Modelling Study from North Norfolk, England
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present quantitative evidence for the effectiveness of a meso-to macro-tidal open coast salt marsh in attenuating incoming waves over a range of tidal and meteorological conditions.
Journal ArticleDOI
Wave height variation across beaches of arbitrary profile
TL;DR: In this paper, an analytical solution for wave height transformation due to shoaling and breaking on a flat shelf, a plane slope, and an equilibrium beach profile is derived and then compared to laboratory data with favorable results.

Coral mortality increases wave energy reaching shores protected by reef flats: Examples from the Seychelles
TL;DR: In this article, a mathematical model of wave energy reaching shorelines protected by coral reef flats has been applied to 14 Seychelles reefs, which is derived from equations which predict: (1) the raised water level, or wave set-up, on reef flats resulting from wave breaking, which depends upon offshore wave height and period, depth of still water over the reef flat and the reef crest profile.

Spectral wave dissipation over a barrier reef
Ryan J. Lowe,James L. Falter,Marion D. Bandet,Geno Pawlak,Marlin J. Atkinson,Stephen G. Monismith,Jeffrey R. Koseff +6 more
TL;DR: In this article, a 2-week field experiment was conducted to measure surface wave dissipation on a barrier reef at Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, Hawaii, where wave heights and velocities were measured at several locations on the fore reef and the reef flat, which were used to estimate rates of dissipation by wave breaking and bottom friction.
