Interpreting the behaviour of calves in an open-field test: a factor analysis
TLDR
In this article, 16 female Holstein calves were tested alone in an open-field to determine how their behavioural and heart rate responses were affected by: (1) the novelty of the enclosure (5 and 15 weeks of age), (2) a period of previous exercise (7 and 14 weeks), and (3) the presence of a familiar or unfamiliar person (8 weeks).About:

A critical review of fear tests used on cattle, pigs, sheep, poultry and horses
TL;DR: This review attempts to establish the level of repeatability and validity found for fear tests used on cattle, pigs, sheep and goats, poultry and horses, and focuses on the three most common types of fear tests: the arena test, the novel object test, and the restraint test.

Mammalian Play: Training for the Unexpected
TL;DR: The "training for the unexpected" hypothesis can account for some previously puzzling kinematic, structural, motivational, emotional, cognitive, social, ontogenetic, and phylogenetic aspects of play and may also account for a diversity of individual methods for coping with unexpected misfortunes.

Invited review: The impact of automatic milking systems on dairy cow management, behavior, health, and welfare
J.A. Jacobs,Janice M. Siegford +1 more
TL;DR: Research must continue to be conducted on AMS to understand the causes and consequences of differences between milking systems as well as the impacts of the different facilities and management systems that surround them on dairy cow behavior, health, and welfare.
Journal ArticleDOI
Human contact and the effects of acute stress on cows at milking.
TL;DR: Cows milked alone in an unfamiliar room showed signs of acute stress and gave less milk due to higher residual milk and reduced oxytocin secretion, but had no effect on milk yield or hormonal responses.

Tests for emotionality in rats and mice: a review.
TL;DR: Findings clearly failed to support the use of emotionality as a consistent constitutional trait, with unitary drive properties, in ‘novel environment’ tests (e.g. emergence tests, active avoidance learning).

Principal Component Analysis and Factor Analysis
TL;DR: The definition of principal components adopted in this chapter is fairly standard and is very much in the spirit of the factor model introduced in Section 7.1 of this chapter.
