TLDR
Data of 22,691 observations on parturition related problems (dystocia, calf mortality, milk fever, retained placenta, and mastitis) were collected from 27 cooperating California dairy herds and decided on breeding virgin heifers based on size of cow because of the effect of size ofcow on difficulty at first parity.

Invited review: Body condition score and its association with dairy cow productivity, health, and welfare

TL;DR: There is relative consistency in the associations among calving and nadir BCS, and BCS change on milk production, postpartum anestrous, the likelihood of a successful pregnancy and days open, therisk of uterine infection, and the risk of metabolic disorders.
Journal ArticleDOI

Path analysis of dry period nutrition, postpartum metabolic and reproductive disorders, and mastitis in Holstein cows.

TL;DR: The study suggests that feeding higher intakes of protein and energy in the last 3 week of the dry period may reduce the incidence of metabolic and reproductive disorders.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: Effects on reproduction of dystocia, stillbirth, abortion, milk fever, retained placenta, metritis, cystic ovaries, anestrus, ketosis, displaced abomasum, locomotor disorders, and mastitis were reviewed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Path model of reproductive disorders and performance, milk fever, mastitis, milk yield, and culling in Holstein cows.

TL;DR: Age, previous lactation yield or estimated transmitting ability for milk, body weight, days dry, reproductive disorders, milk fever, mastitis, reproductive performance, current milk yield, and culling affected heifers' health and survival.
Journal ArticleDOI

Relationship between ovarian activity and energy status during the early postpartum period of high producing dairy cows.

TL;DR: Anestrus cows and cows showing corpus luteum activity between d 40 and 60 obtained more energy from body reserves for milk production the first 2 wk of lactation, than cows cycling prior to d 40.
