A knowledge-based approach for diagnosis of electronic circuits in avionics systems is discussed. The knowledge-based methodology is generic and was designed for accurate and efficient identification of malfunctioning circuit components in diagnostic situations involving single-component malfunctions, multiple independent malfunctions, and multiple interacting malfunctions. The resulting methodology integrates the features of two knowledge-based techniques. Hierarchical classification (HC), a compiled knowledge approach, is used to efficiently identify single and multiple malfunctions. An approach called diagnostically focused simulation, which refines the HC results with causal reasoning, is then used to resolve whether multiple malfunctions are the result of independent component failures or whether an interaction exists that relates the malfunction behaviors. A generally-applicable shell incorporating the methodology was developed in a commercial software package and applied to the development of a diagnostic system for a black and white television circuit. >read more

Diagnostic expert system for hierarchically decomposed knowledge domains
TL;DR: In this article, a forward chaining expert system is described for diagnosing device malfunctions in a knowledge domain having a hierarchical functional decomposition, where the hierarchical decomposition is used in constructing a collection hierarchically related rule sets which constitute the rule base for the expert system.

TL;DR: The diagnostic procedure presented in this paper is model-based, inferring the behavior of the composite device from knowledge of the structure and function of the individual components comprising the device.
Diagnostic Reasoning Based on Structure and Behavior
TL;DR: A system that reasons from first principles, i.e., using knowledge of structure and behavior, which is implemented and tested on several examples in the domain of troubleshooting digital electronic circuits and describes a technique it calls constraint suspension that provides a powerful tool for troubleshooting.

Diagnostic reasoning based on structure and behavior
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe a system that reasons from first principles, i.e., using knowledge of structure and behavior, to deal with situations that are novel in the sense that their outward manifestations may not have been encountered previously.

Model-based reasoning: troubleshooting

TL;DR: Model-based reasoning as mentioned in this paper surveys the state of the art in model-based diagnosis and troubleshooting and concludes that diagnostic reasoning from a model is reasonably well understood, but there is a rich supply of research issues in the modeling process itself.
