Abstract
An improved excitation signal in a low bit-rate coding device for coding a discrete speech signal sequence into an output code sequence for use in exciting a synthesizing filter, an autocorrelation function of an impulse response calculated for the synthesizing filter by using a parmeter sequence representative of a spectral envelope of the segment and a cross-correlation function between the segment and the impulse response are used to produce a sequence of excitation pulses by successively deciding locations and amplitudes of the pulses with the location of a currently processed pulse decided by the use of the locations and the amplitudes of previously processed pulses and with renewal of the previously processed pulse amplitudes carried out concurrently with decision of the currently processed pulse amplitude by the use of the previously and currently processed pulse locations. Alternatively, the currently processed pulse location and the previously and currently processed pulse amplitudes are decided by the use of the previously processed pulse locations. The parameter and the excitation pulse sequences are coded and then combined into the output code sequence. The correlation functions are preferably calculated with the segment and the impulse response weighted by weights dependent on the parameter sequence. The segment may be a frame of the speech signal sequence or a subframe of a constant or variable length.

Multi-pulse speech coder

TL;DR: In this paper, the LPC (linear preductive coding) filter was used to reduce the error between the input and regenerated speech signals, and the selection process involved derivation of an initial estimate followed by an iterative adjustment process in which pulses having a low energy contribution were tested in alternative positions and transferred to them if a reduced error results.

Depth-first algebraic-codebook search for fast coding of speech

TL;DR: In this article, a tree structure with levels ordered from 1 through M is used to reduce the search complexity of a codebook, which consists of a set of codevectors each of 40 positions and comprising N non-zero-amplitude pulses assignable to predetermined valid positions.

Algebraic codebook with signal-selected pulse amplitude/position combinations for fast coding of speech

TL;DR: In this paper, a codebook consisting of a set of pulse amplitude/position combinations is pre-selected in relation to the sound signal, and only this subset of combinations is searched, where each non-zero-amplitude pulse assumes at least one of q possible amplitudes.

Code excited linear predictive vocoder

TL;DR: In this article, a finite impulse response linear predictive coding (LPC) filter and an overlapping codebook are used to determine a candidate excitation vector from the codebook that matches the target excitation vectors after searching the entire codebook for the best match.
